Really jealous watching the Chief's game today. Those big boys were moving people around. Solid blocking, good push. Makes life a lot easier when you have that.

When I watch a football team with a great OL it is pure joy for me. I love watching a great OL that executes like a fine Swiss watch like that. And they just "get it done" snap after snap after snap... imposing their will on the defense. Men against boys stuff. riczaj01 has mentioned many times how Mahomes has it all on that team. Great weapons everywhere. And he has time to execute plays. Here on the Bears I just see QBs getting hurried on most downs and simply not having the time to execute well. Foles gets criticized for throwing some bad passes, but honestly, the guy is being forced to get ball out so fast due to poor OL blocking, that he is sometimes not being accurate. Sometimes the misfires are on Foles alone, but often it is the result of not being given time. He's under crazy pressure. The OL is just getting beaten (and beaten up) by defenses.
One other thing. I hear people justifying this due to the defenses being good. Well yeah. This is the NFL. There ARE good defenses that you have to match up with if you want to be successful. This is the gig at the NFL level. Can't play junior varsity level defensive lines here (or the Lions every week).
The run blocking is even worse than the pass protection. This is just a bad OL. Period.
They sucked ass when Mitch was the qb and are doing so now with Foles. The difference is Foles has the experience to deal with it better than Mitch did hence he’s out.
But this also hurts the run game b/c no team has to worry about Fole's legs or running. And Mitch saved the OL from looking as bad as they actually are b/c he can escape the pressure. Foles threw a very Mitch like int b/c he tried and just tossed it up for an easy pick. He's been fairly lucky b/c he's had a few of those not picked off in past games.
Foles exposes the OL for all that they aren't, Mitch helped hide it. Either way your O isn't going anywhere regardless of who's at qb when the OL cannot do their jobs. MP was right last offseason when he said you couldn't get rid of the OT's b/c of their contracts this offseason, but you can this year. Both need replaced, and you need a long term answer at RG, and still need to draft a qb that best suits what Naggy wants to do.
agree there is a lot to do and the first round draft choice misses really have set things back.
"I cannot express this enough: David Montgomery is not the problem. He just isn’t. Nagy’s famous quote from 2018 comes to mind here: 'We could put Walter Payton back there and he's not getting any yards.'”
I agree. I just don't see holes and lanes being opened for runners. When there is a decent run it looks like the RB got the yards in spite of the OL. Not due to good blocking. Seriously guys. Do you see this OL getting any push or opening anything for runners? I sure don't.
Hate to admit it but I agree.
The OL hasn't been good last few games. Seemed like weeks 1-3 we were getting some good production on the ground but that's just disappeared the last few contests.

I know we have to give Kmet time and Pace drafted him cuz we desperately needed a TE after the Sims/Shaheen/Burton debacles, but damn I was really hoping we were gonna spend one of those 2 2nd round picks on a Tackle this past draft. It was a historically good draft for OTs and man we needed one in the pipeline.
Yes, Massie is now over 30 and due for an upgrade and Leno has been a huge disappointment since getting a big extension after his 2018 Pro-Bowl year. Both need to be replaced or at least competed against in camp but not drafting an OT until the 7th this year means there isn't any young depth there.
Pace comes from the New Orleans tree, an organization who for a while now has prioritized the interior OL over the edges. Pace seems to be following the same path. He seems almost allergic to drafting OTs but has spent substantial resources (draft & FA money) on the Guards & Center.

I was so impressed by the blocking in that 1st game and thought the OL was fixed. But boy, it's a hard thing to watch now. Man, they just don't get any push. RBs have to get their yards on their own with very little help from blocking. You don't really appreciate just how bad it is until you watch one of the better OL's in other games. I just shake my head watching good OL's and realize just how crappy ours is. I come away from those games (I watch a ton of football now) thinking how unfair it is to expect our offense (and Foles) to overcome not having an OL worth a crap. And Leno has regressed in particular. Maybe he's playing injured. But boy, he's a bad LT now. Massie is Massie. And the interior is just getting manhandled and beat.

Yet we still see people who:
(1) Believe that drafting anything except a LT early (like first round early) is criminally wrong. (2) That since we tried drafting the best college center once, we shouldn't try again (3) Consider draft picks other teams used on players that Pace signed in FA to be picks invested by the Bears (4) Consider a line that goes FA-FA-2nd-2nd-7th to indicate an investment of resources (pre-Daniels injury. Its FA-FA-2nd-UDFA-7th if you go with Bars or Coward) (5) Believe that outside of maybe Edge, every other position can be addressed late in the draft an an after thought.
and then we wonder why the OL struggles. I know there have always been other priorities but the bill comes due eventually.

Actually got into a twitter argument over a guy bitching that we didn't draft that S in the 2nd round since he's playing so well. I was like, JJ/CB was an equal need, and it was hard to justify A Def player in the 2nd for as bad as the O was last year. He wanted JJ and Winfield. I was like this Def, as much as it needed a DB to shore it up, needed O more. OT/TE/WR were imo far bigger needs, and it's not like Gipson has been a disappointment. If anything we should be bitching about not going after Claypool or one of the OT's. But of the group of OT's in the 2nd-3rd rounds none are starting. All buried on the depth chart, and at least one not even at OT. The Bears might have dodged a bullet, or judged correctly.
IMO this Def needed another CB more then S, and they needed a TE more then a WR, but of the 3 that didn't get drafted that were needs(S/OT/WR) the needs were OT/WR/S, and of the all the options Claypool has played every bit as well as Winfield and Johnson, and all of the OT's that are not even starting. This O needed, and still needs way more help then this Def.
imo you go:
QB/OT/OG/ILB in rounds 1-5(no 4th this year). And they still need to look at WR if ARob isn't re signed, unless the plan is to look a lot more like KC/Phi in that it will be Big TE/speed WR and then stable possession WR ie Kmet/Mooney and then Miller or Wims or Ridley. The Way they are using Graham in the RZ more and the way Mooney is getting more looks that imo is likely what their plans are. Add in they could be neg 2mil in cap next year and ARob might never been in the long term picture unless he was willing take a very friendly team contract.
btw, not a good year for him to be wanting top billing/pay. He's #1 in targets, 5th in receptions 10th in yards and 1st downs, and 37th in TD's and 62nd in catch % and 89th in yards per target(per pro football reference). Those are not good #'s for the top targeted WR. Team might be looking for a more reliable possession WR
+1 brasil. And now we will spend the next 2-3 years drafting OL and the defense pipeline will suffer. There is no free lunch, everything must be paid for sooner or later.

Unless these people work in scouting/draft board building and have an actual say in the draft, none of 1-5 have anything to do w/why the OL is struggling. I know it's hard to believe, but NFL teams don't give 2 shits about the fans opinion unless it's somehow costing them viewership.
The OL is struggling b/c Pace comes from a system that believes in interior OL > exterior OL, and a HC that hasn't apparently tried to set him straight as to why the system he runs needs to be the opposite.
People need to remember that Leno got his extension bc of how well he played in his contract year, got a pro bowl invite, and at the time was paid around 15th for LT's; and his contract is now closer to 17th-20th. That is probably dead on to a little low for his actual play. He's still a middle of the road LT.
Massie never made sense though, that's a top 10-12 contract for a RT who's play is replaceable at best. That's money poorly spent, and IMO he only got that b/c he was Longs buddy and the team wanted to keep him happy(fat lot of good that did them).
Bonus, both Leno/Massie are a cap savings of 2 to 6 or8 mil depending on when they cut them. You get 16mil from those 2 bums and you can likely get a RT and RG upgrade in FA and it might not even cost you all 16mil; and that means LT/QB/ILB in rounds 1-3 instead of LT/RT/RG/ILB in rounds 1-3 and 5. Opens the draft greatly for bpa.

If that is true (and I have reason to doubt that) then posters who claim that Pace should have drafted an OT in a "strong OT class" really shouldn't post about the draft anymore.
Nothing gets me madder than the draftniks. Pure crap shoot after the "sure things" and even then...But lets make presumptive declarations before the draft and perfect hindsight 20-20 a year or two later. SMH.
