If there’s one thing I’ve learned about offensive football over the years, it’s that playcallers look like bad playcallers when their offensive line isn’t playing well.
Your best play isn’t going to work if it isn’t blocked correctly.
The Bears are 5-1 after beating the Panthers 23-16 in Charlotte Sunday, but their offensive struggles are far from resolved. And you don’t need to watch the coaches’ copy of the film to understand that the offensive line is the heart of the problem.
But why doesn’t Nagy commit to the run? Why does he get so damn cute with his playcalling?
Nagy actually called 15 first down run plays against the Panthers. They gained a total of 57 yards. That’s 3.8 yards per carry. And only six of those runs went for at least four yards, which would typically be considered a successful first down run play. More notably, just as many of those runs went for one yard or less, putting the Bears in 2nd-and-long situations.
You can call run plays, but at some point, your players need to gain the yards.
"I cannot express this enough: David Montgomery is not the problem. He just isn’t. Nagy’s famous quote from 2018 comes to mind here: 'We could put Walter Payton back there and he's not getting any yards.'”
I agree. I just don't see holes and lanes being opened for runners. When there is a decent run it looks like the RB got the yards in spite of the OL. Not due to good blocking. Seriously guys. Do you see this OL getting any push or opening anything for runners? I sure don't.

They sucked ass when Mitch was the qb and are doing so now with Foles. The difference is Foles has the experience to deal with it better than Mitch did hence he’s out.
Really jealous watching the Chief's game today. Those big boys were moving people around. Solid blocking, good push. Makes life a lot easier when you have that.
2 major problems here: Daniels was our best OLer this season, now hes done Leno is sucking I believe 3y in a row now. Is there any chance we try Bars on LG and Coward on LT? We need to try something.

But this also hurts the run game b/c no team has to worry about Fole's legs or running. And Mitch saved the OL from looking as bad as they actually are b/c he can escape the pressure. Foles threw a very Mitch like int b/c he tried and just tossed it up for an easy pick. He's been fairly lucky b/c he's had a few of those not picked off in past games.
Foles exposes the OL for all that they aren't, Mitch helped hide it. Either way your O isn't going anywhere regardless of who's at qb when the OL cannot do their jobs. MP was right last offseason when he said you couldn't get rid of the OT's b/c of their contracts this offseason, but you can this year. Both need replaced, and you need a long term answer at RG, and still need to draft a qb that best suits what Naggy wants to do.
This offense problem has way more to do with Nagy than most other issues. Trubisky is #2 on that list.
I'm interested to see how that plays out as the season wears on. They had a few good showings and are now starting to stack up poor ones.
I never understood the 2nd graph there, left/right, I'm guessing is outside the OT's, left/right tackle I'm guessing is between the Tackle and Guards and then mid guard must be between the 2 guards. If that is the case, Leno is getting a ton of heat he doesn't deserve, and Massie is a legit issue this year, and Guard/Center/Guard are just average to slightly above it.
Again need to see how it plays out by the end of hte year.
