Potential scenarios surrounding the quarterback battle By Joseph Herff - August 29th, 2020
The whole talk of the 2020 NFL offseason has been the battle between the quarterbacks of the Chicago Bears. The battle is between the former second overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft Mitchell Trubisky and Super Bowl 52 MVP Nick Foles.
Trubisky has struggled so far for the Chicago Bears. He showed a lot of promise in 2017 being thrown into the dumpster fire offense. Then, Trubisky took a major step forward in 2018 posting the third-best Quarterback Rating in the NFL and leading the Bears to a 12-4 season. In 2019, Trubisky looked to take a step back with the poor Bears’ offense. This led to Ryan Pace bringing in Foles to give him pressure and take the job if Trubisky struggles again.
Foles has had an up and down career thus far. In his second season in 2013, Foles posted one of the greatest seasons of all-time throwing 27 touchdowns and only two interceptions with a 119.2 passer rating. After that, he bounced around struggling elsewhere before leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory in the 2017-2018 season.
After excelling again in 2018, Foles signed to be the starter in Jacksonville and flopped there. He ended up losing his job to sixth-round rookie Gardner Minshew. This led to him being traded to the Bears.
So far in camp, this battle has been back and forth. Trubisky wins some days; Foles wins others. Foles has had the best days of the two and is slightly winning, but it isn’t over yet. Neither player has really shined yet, but one will need to prove himself in order to win the job. With that said, here are the options that can come from this camp.
Bears: QB competition could be decided on Saturday By Patrick Sheldon - August 28th, 2020
The Chicago Bears quarterback competition appears to be mercifully coming to an end. After months of debate, and a few weeks of tense exchanges between fans on Twitter, we are a little over two weeks away from the start of the NFL season.
In just 16 days, the Bears will be in Detroit to take on the Lions in the season opener. To this point, Nick Foles and Mitchell Trubisky have equally split practice repetitions as Matt Nagy and the coaching staff attempt to evaluate who will be under center for that game.
LINK What happens if both quarterbacks play poorly?
This could be very bad for the team. This could result in the firing of Ryan Pace and/or Matt Nagy causing the Bears to go through a full rebuild of staff. They would be wasting years of talent on their defense and even some on their offense. This is something that is possible and should scare Bears fans.
I would prefer that Mitch win the competition and shine for the Bears for many years. If not, then I hope Foles wins and shines for the Bears. I just hope we don't have the situation where neither pan out.
Chicago Bears: Five concerns about QB competition By Usayd Koshul - August 29th, 2020
The Chicago Bears quarterback competition will continue next week behind closed doors. As the team begins preparing for their week one matchup against the Detroit Lions, the hope is that either Mitchell Trubisky or Nick Foles begins to distance themselves from the competition sometime over the next week or so.
With current events around the United States forcing the Bears to postpone practice, time is quickly running out. All offseason, all eyes have been on both quarterbacks. Trubisky, aside from one game during his second season where he threw six touchdowns, has yet to prove that he can hold down the role for a full season and be consistent while doing so.
On the other hand, Foles has a Super Bowl MVP on his resume and has traditionally played much better when he comes off the bench during the season. If he does manage to start week one, it will be the third straight season that he’s the starter for a different team to open the season.
Not much has been said about what’s going on at Halas Hall. In press conferences throughout the week, even head coach Matt Nagy only seems to reveal a bit about the quarterback competition, only adding more fuel to the fire.
It seems as if every week, for every good piece of information we hear, there’s a red flag because something concerning is going on. As the quarterback competition continues, what are five reasons to be concerned with just two weeks to go until the Bears first regular-season game?
