Bears are dodging questions about Eddy Pineiro's performance. Santos is sure not the answer at kicker even if they do move on from Eddie P. It seems kind of late to be adding a kicker in the mix right now, a week or so from September. Something doesn't seem right here.
LINK Bears dealing with more questions at kicker with expected signing of veteran Cairo Santos, per report Chicago's infamous list of kicking issues just might be getting longer
... But Saturday's addition of old friend Cairo Santos, first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, raises new questions at a position that's overflowed with them in Chi-Town. Piñeiro did not attempt a single field goal during media portions of Bears training camp this week, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, and Nagy gave a "non-answer" earlier Saturday when asked about his kicker's performance, suggesting the team simply hasn't gotten to the point of camp where it's focused on special teams. But most teams don't make kicking practice a separate part of the camp schedule, often allowing special teamers to partake in their own drills on a daily basis. Even more notable, perhaps, was special teams coordinator Chris Tabor indicating Saturday that Piñeiro's job is not guaranteed: "You have to do what's best for the team."
Santos may very well just be late-camp competition -- an extra leg for the final weeks leading up to the 2020 season. He hasn't played in all 16 games since 2016, and he converted just four of nine FG tries (44.4%) for the Tennessee Titans in 2019. But the Bears' seemingly unending penchant for kicker drama suggests this could ultimately be more than an August flyer.

Don't wanna bring up the Robbie Gould discussion again but you can't deny the fact that since he left, the kicker position has been a mess. Something we never had to worry about for years.

I agree that we were blessed to have the position stable for all those Robbie Gould years. But I do understand the reasoning for the Bears moving on back then.
I'm fine with bringing someone in but Gay was pretty bad last year. Granted he was a rookie. But he whiffed on 5 extra points. He missed a lot of field goals (only hit on 77%). I can see why they cut him in camp this year. Pineiro had some issues (and a knee injury) but to his credit he did fight through them to finish the season on a high note. His FG% was 82% for the season. He was a perfect 2 for 2 from 50+ yards last year too. I think he showed mental toughness the way he fought back from adversity, and that is perhaps the #1 trait in a good kicker. Pineiro finished the season with seven successful field goals and nine extra-point attempts. They all go through slumps. The good ones are able to get their head straight and get back on track.
I don't know if Pineiro is the guy for us, but I'm not too keen on Gay.
