Should just make it all season, now. Protecting the players by controlling everything as much humanly possible is the only hope for a full season.
Players are going to be infected by fans in the stands dozens and often hundreds of feet away?
Really??
I don't think the fan/player transmission is a potential problem at all. But fan/fan transmission is what I'd worry about (if they open Soldier Field to fans before there is a vaccine). My personal experience at SF games has been that it's a mass of humanity getting into the stadium, and after the games, holy cow, it's a lot of people who have drank too much - just in a sea of humanity trying to get out of the stadium. LOL. No social distance thing is going to happen there. Lotta VERY overweight old guys too... gonna "thin the Bears herd" if they go that route. JMO.
LOL, but maybe that will open up some season tickets for 2021 :-)
If this continues, maybe some stadiums will have fans before we know it!
How many season ticket holders opted out for the Bears? Sounds like about 60% of Vikings season ticket holders opted out and over 80% of Packers season ticket holders (that shocked me).
Sucks that some teams get to have (some) fans while others don't get to have any. We all know Jerry Jones is going to have as many as possible, so if they don't screw it up...

Well, yeah, absolutely, but that's also not the full point. You do not have a very scientific grasp on how this disease is spread. Please watch this video.
A stadium full of untested people is an uneeded variable. Not only is it for the players to not have hundreds of potentially infected people screaming and cheering all day, walking every inch of a stadium, potentially contaminating every surface in the players' work space. Mass gatherings are still a terrible idea for the general population.

Dude, I'm a physician. A physician who has been working in hospitals throughout this entire pandemic when most people were at home on Zoom. Including in the early days when we didn't have enough PPE.
I'm fully aware of the idea of fan-to-fan spread in a crowded stadium -- let me be clear here -- NO ONE is suggesting that. There ARE teams having limited fans with restrictions, even at practices, and also at games.
Is there a risk even with commonsense precautions? Of course! Life has risks! No one is forcing anyone to go. It is OPTIONAL. And, lets be honest here, its often a POLITICAL decision made by state and local leaders and we all knew Lori Lightfoot was never gonna allow that. (Rioting/Looting are OK, of course). I called the Bears and got my ST refund quite a while ago knowing how this was gonna play out. Writing was on the wall all summer.
All of the above is beyond the point however as you were talking about PLAYER safety. A) The vast majority of players are at very, very low risk of serious complications and B) The odds of a player contracting Covid from a fan in the stands is ridiculously low.

Congrats on your MD, and thanks for working alongside people like my mom and wife - but low isn’t good enough. We don’t need to be in attendance. We don’t need to worry about the personnel throughout the stadium carrying a virus into fan-restricted zones and endangering players.
I will repeat, if you want a full season, control everything you can and avoid all unknown variables. Chances being low aren’t good enough, these days.
Also, more and more evidence of the “hang time” and proliferation of our aerosolized fluids shows a much bleaker picture than the antiquated six foot rule.
This Covid-19 subject is so controversial with everyone right now. I know that I sure get emotional about how it has impacted everyone. Kudos to you, MP, for the work you are doing in the hospital. My daughter and daughter-in-law both work in hospital settings (one is an ER nurse) and I do worry about them both. Anyway, we're never going to agree here on the way sports teams are responding to the virus threat. Let's just "agree to disagree" here. I'll be so happy when this world pandemic is behind us and we don't even have to talk about it anymore.
