This is an outstanding read regarding a number of camp topics, but the part about Anthony Miller is exceptional.
LINK Bears training camp storylines: Anthony Miller’s direct challenge, a long-awaited return to practice and John DeFilippo’s quarterback outlook
For two seasons now, Miller has shown a little bit of all of that.
There have been flashes of brilliance. The No. 51 pick in the 2018 draft had a team-high seven touchdown catches as a rookie and enjoyed a five-game stretch in November and December last season in which he piled up 33 receptions, 431 yards and two touchdowns.
But there have also been prolonged periods of inconsistency, with the Bears coaching staff wondering if Miller understood the details of the playbook and grasped the preparation demands of the NFL.
So now, with Miller entering his third season, Furrey doesn’t want to get stuck in a vicious cycle of talking about Miller’s potential. It’s time to start seeing production — every week.
If the Bears are to revive an offense that finished in the bottom five in the league in most major statistical categories last season, Miller’s emergence will be crucial. If the Bears are to return to the playoffs, Miller will have to play a major role in 2020.
He needed to step up last year, at the start to help create a reliable 2nd option; especially w/the all the TE's that went down.
This O needs a strong TE, a strong WR and a good and reliable 3rd WR and RB and a quality OL. This team all last year lacked all but the strong WR. Notice I didn't mention great qb or even strong QB play, it was successful w/Foles, Smith and Wentz, none of which are looked at as similar as Mahomes in ability/ceiling, and Foles won a SB also.
Even a competent QB can work in this system w/the right pieces in place, this team had none of it. It lacked even an average TE after the top 3 went down, Miller didn't realize that the NFL is a profession and not college ball you can slide through, Id say Mitch and the OL and Cohen felt the same way, but w/no 2nd option to rely on it took a limited qb and made him rely one 1 playmaker.
