These are probably the most at-risk to Covid-19 during games and practices.
LINK The guys in the trenches might be the most concerned
Browns center and NFLPA president JC Tretter said on a conference call a couple of weeks ago that his job will be "more dangerous than ever" this season, and it's not hard to see why. Tretter's job literally requires that he and other guys are breathing in one another's faces on every play. Given what we know about how COVID-19 is transmitted, this is not ideal.
So maybe it's no surprise that 20 of the 66 opt-outs were offensive linemen and 10 others were defensive tackles. Those are the guys who are up close and in each other's faces on every play. While Tretter didn't opt out, his words echoed in our minds as we watched so many trench players make the list. (There were 11 wide receivers, too, but we don't have as obvious a speculative reason for that.)
There just are no easy answers for this season. It sucks no matter how it all plays out. I just hope they do find an effective vaccine and people get the vaccine - and we can get some semblance of normality again in our lives.
1st surprised the # is that low, that's about 2 players per team, so 3% of each 53 man roster. I would have guessed it would be higher.
2nd I'm surprised the Big guys don't make up a higher % of that 66.
3rd Unless it was a key player(sorry Goldman isn't one on the current def) then it shouldn't be looked at w/an * unless it all goes to hell in the pre/reg season. Lose a franchise qb, lose a franchise pass rusher or OT or the WR/RB your team is built around ya that's going to hurt, the middle of the road(on that team) starter isn't a significant loss.

Most of the players want to play. It's a tough spot for them. Most players' careers are not long, so losing a season is a tough thing to endure. Financially it can be a big loss to lose a year of pay... their Covid pay if they opt out is not so much. And maybe some players may be worried that if they opt out then someone plays in their place and shines in their absence, it could hurt their career too.
I have no clue as to what will happen this season. Maybe it all works out okay. It could. Or it could be bad. I figure we'll just have to watch and see. I'll be so glad though when this virus is behind us and there is a vaccine.
