EH this qb class after the the 1st was awful. No loss in any of them; and that's coming from the guy that has said look for a guy in the 2nd and 3rd days all the time. This wasn't the year to draft one just to draft one.
OK maybe a QB every draft is excessive but I meant it as a rule of thumb.. something to aim for.
The organization cant look at their success rate at drafting a good QB and let that be an influencing factor on drafting one. I feel this was the consensus of both team and fans alike for a long time after Cade McNown. I admit thought for years after that pick, 'Let's not even chance making that mistake again!' However game was different then. If one could take the past Superbowl matchup and play it in those days the 49ers may have held down the Chiefs. Now it's common for a team to have a historic QB led comeback (Pats over ATL, Chiefs over 49ers).
Hey I'm all for a qb drafted early and often. When we had Cutler I was calling for all sorts of 2-4 rd qb's, every year, so I get it, but you have to look at the qb's and see if they fit the scheme you are looking for, if they are talented at all. And this drafts qb talent in the 2-4 was not good, at all. It was sad, a really poor talent class. There isn't a Dak, Wilson or Cousins in this group; and I look for them.
Mitch wont start unless foles let's him ... by not turning up
Wanted to add for me Mitch plays afraid with fear.. not a great asset at qb
I'm open to whomever. I've already thrown out the 2019 season as one where "everything that could go wrong - did" and we should see a better year here. Mitch could (could) surprise us. He is the 2018 QB of a 12-win team that was a top-10 scoring offense that year @ 26.3ppg. His numbers were not great that year but his passer rating of 95.4 was only 2 points off from guys like Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers... so it wasn't horrible.
Whomever starts this year will probably do better than last season. Probably significantly better. If the team can stay relatively healthy I don't know why they couldn't end up closer to the 12-win 2018 season rather than the 8-win 2019 season. Of course only time will tell.
Hey, welcome to the messageboard. GREAT to have you here!
Thank you JABF9 ... the 12 win season for me was won by the defence .. how many points did they score .. how many wins did they secure . Losing hicks and teams pretty much take away mack as much as is humanly possible meant Mitch and the offense had to step up to fill the defense regression .. I lost count of the open receivers he missed .. and we cannot say he didnt have talent to throw at .. he plays great out of the pocket but the other coaches know that to and have taken that away as well . As a pocket passer he is not good enough, maybe offense calls would have helped .But good not least great QB learn to adjust he did not and maybe hasn't the ability... with the lack of college game time they took a risk on one season and finding an uncut diamond... I'm not sure he's made of that stuff. Thank you for welcome.. I wish we could draft QBs better though.. some teams can . We draft great defence though and for me that's what the bears are all about . McMahon wasn't a great QB just a huge competitor who did enough and thought he was a God . Mitch doesnt believe in himself .. you can feel his fear .. I can .. with a monumental defence (and healthy we have that) and a QB who can do enough ( hopefully foles or a Mitch with Belief) the superbowl will be ours again ... hopefully .. I've been hoping for 25 odd years though

You make a lot of good points there. And you're right that confidence is a huge part of a successful quarterback (at any level HS, college and NFL). Playing without confidence is a killer to a QBs game. I saw that too in Trubisky last year. It will be interesting to watch what happens this year. I believe it could go either way with Trubisky. I'm not making excuses for him but just trying to be objective regarding what the Bears did to him (it doesn't justify bad play... I'm just trying to be honest evaluating him). In hindsight the Bears never should have drafted him:
1. They drafted a kid with minimal starting experience and gave him to John Fox and "The Logg" to "develop" (gag)
2. They gave him Mike Glennon to be "mentored" (gag)
3. Glennon craps the bed and they shuffle out the kid who had no business starting at that point. If the Bears wanted that kind of QB they NEVER should have drafted Trubisky. They flat knew the kid needed to carry a clipboard and learn for awhile. He was nowhere near being ready.
4. The next year, 2018, he is trying to learn an offense that Nagy himself says takes 3 years to really learn how to run at the QB position. The OL is pretty decent that year and Trubisky had a lot of ups and downs - he still had a passer rating that year that was 95.4 (roughly equivalent to Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady that year).
5. In 2019 the bottom fell out on offense. The OL implodes, the TE unit never shows up, the WRs (other than Robinson) struggle, there is zero run-game, Nagy calls bizarre plays (forgets he even has a run game component in some games)... and Mitch craps the bed. What a train wreck.
So I'm not defending Mitch here. He may be a total bust. But I do want to see him have the chance to EARN the QB role this year. If he does then great. If he flops then hey, move on to the next guy. I'm just trying to keep an open mind for this upcoming season. Whatever happens, happens. Could be good or bad for Mitch. At least we will have closure on it all this year. For that I am thankful.
JABF you are right .. I cannot disagree. But from my experience I have to stop listening to my heart. I really wanted Kevin White as an example to shine , same situation, 1 year starter with 1 amazing year in college.. all the tangible on paper. The committees were split on him or Amari Cooper that year in the WR first one taken. I wasn't disappointed Amari went first and we got White at spot 9 ish . That is where we are with Mitch now ... I think if he had X factor it would have happened... most of his completion in the end were short inside if they threw much at all . If I think with my head its improbable he will become what my heart wants him to become , like White time. My head says let the good kid go.

Couldn't agree more on John Fox. Keeping him year 3 after just drafting a new 1st round QB was a terrible plan and I complained about it at the time. Whether is was Phillips or Pace, it was a dumb decision.
I know everyone likes to point to the Rodgers example where he "sat for a couple years to learn". What's conveniently omitted in that shining example is that he was "sitting" behind a HOF starter who had announced plans to retire and then un-retired like 3 times. It was an anachronistic situation. The far more common situation for a top-10 drafted QB is that he is starting no later than week 1 of year 2, often sooner. The media and PR pressure just gets that way.
Anyway, I can see people describing Trub's 1st season as a waste (makes sense) but I don't see it as damaging. The team was awful that year, everyone knew it was awful, and no one expected anything from Mitch. No one seriously criticized Mitch for a "bad rookie season". So it really doesn't make a difference if he was "rushed in too early". No harm, no foul

Yeah, there are a number of things that still frustrate me, and I understand that no QB going into the NFL gets an ideal situation with perfect coaches and perfect surrounding talent. I also understand the difference between Rodgers and Trubisky's situations. I just don't understand why the Bears drafted Trubisky given their situation. The transition from Angelo/Lovie in 2012, to where we are now with Pace/Nagy in 2020 included too many mistakes. We are 8 years out from that transition beginning and the team has not accomplished what we accomplished under Angelo/Lovie. I've said it countless times here, that I was 100% all-in on moving on from Angelo and Lovie. But the miss-steps since have been heart breaking. Too many. The QB issue has been just one.
In spite of all of the bad past history I'm "over it" if the franchise can just turn the corner now. If Trubisky proves to be the guy, then great. If not, then hopefully we can get some use from Foles until we can draft a franchise QB. And I'm hoping that Pace/Nagy can work out here and be the GM/HC combo we so dearly want to have long-term because blowing it all up can just mean more pain and suffering (e.g. the post-Angelo/Lovie era). Sure you still have to repeat the cycles of firing/hiring and "hope" someday it all gets better. And that's what most frustrates me. I do want to see the team get better... but when is the "better" part coming? Better is winning a super bowl. Angelo/Lovie got us TO one. I figure "better" gets us a Lombardi Trophy. LOL, and I sure as heck never EVER want to see another Bears offense as butt-ugly as last season. It was enough to burn your eyeballs out watching the game of football played that badly.
