I agree. Qb is simply that important. And odds of getting it right are slim. And getting a quality FA is either impossible or crazy moneywise. So, its just common sense to draft one EVERY year.
I would say it's wise to draft a QB at least every other year. That's what New England did even during the epic run they had with Brady there. How much more important would it be when you never had a good starter to begin with?
The whole Bears organization, not a knock on Ryan Pace, has been just terrible at the entire QB process for decades. It's such a shame cuz we have had lots of really good defenses over those years and could have won 3-4 more SBs easily just by being merely competent in the QB department.
The great defenses of the late 80s and mid-2000s were wasted. The great defenses of 2018-date are facing that same fate.
Bears Defense was #1 in entire NFL in points allowed both 2018 & 2019.

Oh absolutely. I was just today watching a game Grizz recommended in that other thread, in 2001. Good team. And Jim Miller was our QB...

I can get behind the every other year. Just pick 3-4 guys you can put in a tier, and when there is 1 left draft him. 1 pick every other year would be a small price to pay.
Dropping this.comment here as this thread pertains to the position. I like what the Jets did taking a QB in the 4th despite seemingly having their starter a very young Sam Darnold who thus far has shown be a starter with a pretty high ceiling thus far in his young career. It seems that the Bears FO no matter who is at the helm feels as though it is never the year for the Bears to draft a QB unless the entire NFL & its fans feel they need to take a QB. It is thought/said that there are always too many other holes on the roster to fill. The QB position is the toughest in determining which prospect will be successful. From a historical perspective the Bears have been at the bottom of the league when it comes to talent at the QB position for the last half century or more (forever?). The NFL has designed itself to be a passing league so to be successful having a solid QB is as important to as ever. The single best way to increase their odds at having more talent at the position is to consistently draft a QB. Yet another draft year goes by without a single QB drafted and teams much more stable at the position realize the importance... see GB Packers.
I thought the Jets actually had a damn good draft all told and I was hoping Morgan was gonna fall to the 5th for us. Thought he was an ideal developmental QB prospect for day 3.
QB's always go much higher than the talent level at other positions & often higher than anticipated. That makes it even tougher to pick one as there are always prospects available at other positions held in higher regard and on top of it in other positions of need. I like the old adage of taking the best player available rather than reaching for a position of need. That has to be thrown out the window for QB. I think its best to grab ur QB when the rest of the league doesn't think your going there. Hard to argue with Philly NYJ or GB. The worst that can happen is you miss on a pick and you may have to manage your QBs ego. Best you have 2 starting QB's with perceived unlimited potential. In the now trade friendly NFL 1 would fetch quite a haul.

Worst that could happen is they passed on a guy who could have helped their current HOF QB while wasting a pick on a QB. Many more variables at play with that relationship, too, which can combine for a much worse case scenario, too.

I know it's not conventional...but essentially we did draft a QB this year...Nick Foles, in the 4th round.

A few random thoughts here. I think Pace could be the kind of guy who eventually drafts QBs like that. I think he was playing catch up with the roster being so bad when he arrived. I think that was HIS thinking... that he had to draft other positions and did not have the luxury of drafting QBs frequently. Early in his tenure here he said something to the effect that he believed in drafting QBs often like we are discussing here.
What really frustrates me is that we don't have to have a great offense to be a great team. The team scored 26ppg in 2018 and won 12 games. We won our division and we were a double-doink kick away from advancing in the playoffs that year. Then in 2019 our offense fell to 17ppg and became an 8 win team and 3rd place in our division. I looked it up today and found that usually the league-wide average ppg is right around 21 or 22ppg. That's the average. I figure that even with a great defense, we need to have scoring that is at least average.
I'll bet that beginning next draft we see Pace begin to draft QBs more often. The roster overall is night-and-day better now than when he inherited the Emery roster, and we will not be paying the bill for past trades that cost us our 1st round picks (not whining about it, but just saying that affects a draft). 2021 should be a year where we are no longer playing catch up but rather just doing normal drafting. As "normal" as it ever gets.

Good point. I sure hope Nick is more prepared than any QB picked in this years draft at the start of the season!
I am really hopeful for him! Not that I don't hope MT turns it but I've been watching him in a Bears uni. Nick's supposedly very athletic and has some game on the basketball court as well.
Best case scenario Nick is clutch making JAX look foolish and Mitchell comes back a master of reading D and redeems Ryan Pace's trade-up to grab him. Bears have a BIG QB controversy that agoes Boon over Bust!
EH this qb class after the the 1st was awful. No loss in any of them; and that's coming from the guy that has said look for a guy in the 2nd and 3rd days all the time. This wasn't the year to draft one just to draft one.
OK maybe a QB every draft is excessive but I meant it as a rule of thumb.. something to aim for.
The organization cant look at their success rate at drafting a good QB and let that be an influencing factor on drafting one. I feel this was the consensus of both team and fans alike for a long time after Cade McNown. I admit thought for years after that pick, 'Let's not even chance making that mistake again!' However game was different then. If one could take the past Superbowl matchup and play it in those days the 49ers may have held down the Chiefs. Now it's common for a team to have a historic QB led comeback (Pats over ATL, Chiefs over 49ers).
