I was just thinking how Pace maybe got us into some sort of cap hell/dead cap situation with all the pricey FAs and throwin away picks...

But lets see if thats really the case. Spotrac was my source.

Start with QBs, usually most expensive position.

Although we have 30mil this year for Foles and Trubisky, we are totally free next year, as we dont have any dead cap for any of them. Of course, Foles contract could continue for 20mil/y.

RB - similar situation, only RB we have signed for next year is Monty for only 1,1 mil

WRs - hopefully we extend ARob soon, a 3y contract sounds good to me. But he is also an FA next year, as well as Cordy. Miller, Wims and Ridley could be here but only take 3,5 mil combined.

TE - Graham could be a 3 mil dead cap hit if cut and Burton half of that, but a lot of mil could be saved here.

OL - this is where it gets a little more expensive, more tied money. Leno hopefully ups his game and no need to cut him cos he would be 5mil dead cap hit. On the other hand, Massie could be a casualty cos he would be half of that hit and would save almost 7mil in cap! Whitehair will be here, as well as Daniels. Others are FAs.

DL - also pricey. Hicks hopefully we want to keep thru next season too, but if not he only has 1,5 mil dead cap and 10,5 mil relief! Goldman is young and good enough to keep and Quinn is here to stay if theres no trade.

LB - Same thing as for Quinn goes for Mack. Here if not traded (or restructured somehow). Danny T will be here, Smith also, Igy too. A lot of money invested here at these position, probably only half-cripling for us - 38 mil combined.

Secondary - Fuller has 20mil contract with 9mil dead and Jackson has 13,mil with 7 dead. Hopefully both here to stay. Skrine has 6 mil with 3 mil dead, so probably here too if he shows decent game. All others are minor contracts or FAs.

As a conclusion, we have about 150 mils tied for next year. Including starting RB, 1 WR, 3 OLs, complete DL and LBs, and no.1 CB and S.

With cap going up we are talking about a lot of flexibility. A lot of holes, but also a lot of flexibility!

With cap going up we are talking about a lot of flexibility. A lot of holes, but also a lot of flexibility!

We are fairly tight on cap at this moment but that really doesn't worry me too much. Every year I read about teams supposedly "in cap hell" and it never materializes as a serious problem. [The Saints have been "in cap hell" almost every year and always seem to be competitive anyway.] Point is, there are ways to free up space, the overall cap is going up big time next year, and GOOD TEAMS TEND TO BE TIGHT AGAINST THE CAP CUZ THEY HAVE GOOD PLAYERS THAT COST $$$. If you look every year at the teams that are spending wildly in FA and have tons of space to play with, you will see they are almost always crappy teams. BAD TEAMS TEND TO HAVE PLENTY OF FREE CAP SPACE.

That's not to say you can be stupid and don't have to make some tough choices here and there, you do. But I don't think the Bears have been out of control crazy with spending.

This offseason, I do have to question Pace's choices however with the Graham contract in particular. It seems like an overpay for a player at his (late) stage of his career. Feels like Pace panicked a little desperately trying to patch a hole when he could have got Graham for considerably cheaper if he had waited a few more days. Didn't feel like there was a huge market building for him out there. My other concern is the Trevathan contract as I pointed out in the other thread. It's really a pretty risky gamble, given his age and injury history, to backload that much potential dead cap into year 3. I hope we don't end up regretting that one. Neither of these contracts are fatal; they are just non-ideal IMO.

The team has definitely gotten older this year on average but I expect that to be a short term problem only. Broken record again, I really think its almost imperative that Pace trades down at least once in the 2nd round this year. We could use 2 extra picks in rounds 3-4 just for the pipeline.

Getting back to the overall cap situation, a LARGE chunk of it this year has had to be spent unfortunately to rectify Pace's 1st round (TOP-10!) draft misses.

Robinson for White
Quinn for Floyd
Foles for Trubisky

Yes, I know that no GM nails all his draft picks, even 1st rounders. But...when you miss on 3 straight top-10 picks, that hurts and that costs you. Pace did miss 3 straight.

As of now looking at probably 60 mill in cap space figuring the cap goes up to 210.
