Your point is valid except for the fact that the Bears are stuck with Trubisky in 2020, like it or not. His 2020 money is guaranteed so there's nothing to gain by cutting him and no one is gonna trade for him.
Mitch isn't going anywhere this season though I do agree his ass could be planted on the bench.
Right either way there is no real competition if you are paying the other guy 20mil a year. This isn't the type of contract you are giving someone to come in and compete w/Mitch. This is the contract you are giving someone to replace him.
I would tend to agree.
However, I think Mitch is only making about $9m this year so a combination of ~ $30m between the two is about average for a starting QB off his rookie deal now. It's really not unusual at all. And it would just be for 1 season.

It's not the cap space of the position as much as you dont pay 20mil for someone to hopefully win the position. Hell they gave glennon the position until he proved he couldn't do it. Yet bridgewater has more starter clout and a longer term deal.
Same if you traded a 2nd or higher pick for a qb. That says he is your qb going forward
For starters, Newton is no longer the elite physical and athletic specimen he was when he took the league by storm as the No. 1 overall pick en route to Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2011, a second Pro Bowl in 2013 and NFL MVP in 2015. His past two seasons have been halted by surgeries — a pair of right shoulder operations and most recently, lisfranc after playing in only two games last season. That's why we mention below the importance of a team-administered physical that the Bears likely couldn't even get done right now amid the coronavirus travel restrictions imposed by the NFL.
So the Bears would be willingly taking on enormous volatility with Newton — and that's purely from a medical standpoint. Then we get into his numbers over his career, which are worse than Mitch Trubisky's in several key categories, including completion percentage (59.6 vs. 63.4) and INT percentage (2.7 vs. 2.3). Heck, even their passer ratings are nearly the same (86.1 to 85.8), and Newton's rushing superiority over Trubisky was negligible in his last season with at least 14 starts in 2018.
Then there's the whole availability thing. Because Newon has only played twice since 2013, odds are the Bears would be turning back to Trubisky at some point after replacing him. That's a problem, as is selling competition (it was always going to be) if they acquire via trade a former No. 1 overall pick, NFL MVP and once of the faces of the league.
We get it that the game of musical chairs has slowed down and the Bears have yet to find a place, but going after Newton smacks of desperation, not a decision that would be borne from logic or likely have the best chance of being successful. No thanks

I get the politics of it and don't care if Trubisky's feelings are hurt. I don't think Pace cares either (his job is on the line, dumpster fire in 2020=Pace fired in January 2021). Pace is also the same GM who said Glennon "was the guy" and then moved up to draft another QB at #2 without telling him. Guy saw it on TV.
If acquired:
Carr is the #1 Foles is the #1 Cam is the #1
No matter what BS they say.
Only one left who might truly be a "competition" is Dalton. Mainly because Dalton isn't much better than Mitch.

And a LisFranc is a big injury with a long recovery time. I really don't want Cam more and more I think about it.

That was my thought too. The guy medically, due to multiple injuries, reminds me of a Kyle Long type situation where he may never be decent again. I'll be pretty disappointed if we sign him. And I'll be disappointed with Pace. Ultimately if Mitch is not the guy, then I think the long-term solution is to go back to the draft in 2021 and start this all over again at QB. It sucks. But guys like Cam are not going to save the franchise of its O woes. In fact, this just reminds me of the Mike Glennon signing... not that they are the same QB, but rather it's just another pathetic QB move.

Me too, I just dont see why we would go for him. Dalton or Foles could at least be a mentor for Trub. What about Cam?
