Only if he hits his incentives, which likely only happens of he starts, if he is starting and hitting his incentives then he likely doesnt want to opt out, which was always the only way he was getting out of here in yr 2.
I give Pace credit for creativity here. He got Foles on board on a very team friendly deal (which is probably why it cost us a 4th round pick).
Two schools of thought here:
A) Foles' cheap 2020 cost means the "QB competition" is Trubisky's to lose. I.e., Foles would only start if Trubisky looked bad again.
B) Signing older FAs like Quinn and Graham + a short window on defense means Pace/Nagy need to win NOW. That makes the starting job Foles' to lose in TC/PS.
IMO, if the Bears make the playoffs, Pace & Nagy are clearly safe.
If the Bears have a solid season but fall a little short (8-9 wins), they are probably safe.
If the team has a dumpster fire year (6 or less wins), then I think they're both shown the door.
All of this assuming we even have a season.
Well I think there are 2 reasons Foles opts out, he starts and is good enough to hit all the incentives, OR he sits and is backup, which means Trubs is actually playing well enough to have earned the starting job so he opts out and tries to get one more starting job somewhere.
I would guess this is a real open competition, I've felt it's likely always been Tru's job to lose as it's in Pace's best interest for him to win it, but neither Pace or Nagy are going to ride this season on another struggling Mitch season. He either plays up to his potential and earns the job or he sits on his butt and the Bears look to draft another qb next season. Either way Foles isn't likely year year 3.
I'm w/you 8-9 wins and they might be safe, kind of depends on if it looks like last year, or if it looks competitive and they just fell short. Less then 8 wins and they are likely gone b/c that means that nothing worked.
