Don't get me wrong, I like Danny T and he is still a good player.
But......
He turns 30 this year and he hasn't exactly been that durable. He's missed substantial time several years with the team and is coming off a significant injury in 2019.
That contract isn't exactly "cheap". It's ~ $8m AAV. How much is Nick K gonna cost....maybe $9-10m? For a player who's 3+ years younger, more durable, and was a draft pick, I'm not sure saving a couple mil is gonna be a wise decision in the long-term.
I hope I'm wrong. I assume all the guaranteed money is in the 1st 2 years and the team has an out for the 3rd.
8mil if he hits everything, no doubt 16games seasons are required for some of the escalators.
No way of knowing what nick will get, but 9 to 10 mil for a not as good player is to much, even if he is on the field for more games.
Danny of all ilbs on the bears last year was the best one. I'd rather pay less for more, even I'd the risk is he misses some the. Pay more for less.
You can keep Kwiatkowski for about $10 million and save the $13 million by letting Floyd go if you can't get him to restructure his contract to get closer to what he is actually worth.

Not sure Kwiat is "not as good a player". He was pretty damn good last year, especially as a run-stuffer and blitzer. He's also less likely to decline as fast as Trevathan. People seem to remember Nick getting burned in coverage couple seasons ago but he fixed that problem last year. Its always my priority to re-sign the younger, ascending player over the one who's at or maybe soon past his peak.
Have to see the details of the contract on incentives but it is minimum >$7m/yr AAV with the first 2 years guaranteed for $14m. Point I'm making is that it isn't all that "cheap". Its not like Pace locked up a solid vet for under $5m.

Nick is a good player no doubt. Not saying g he isnt, but he isnt as good as but even if he is as good, then he isn't worth more the n DT. And again they can draft a guy to be the long term replacement, plus a comp pick.
I doubt dt sees the 3rd year. He is the 15th highest paid ilb, and after nick probably the 16th. So it's an average contract for ab above average player so yes itsa good contract

I can buy that.
It will be a very good signing if Danny T has a couple good years left in him and stays relatively healthy. If he misses half the season each of the next two years, it will be an overpay considering you could have gotten a younger player locked down for only a little bit more AAV.
Speaking of what you said, I went to great lengths recently to point out how, if they were able to acquire him, Derek Carr would be an above-average 28yo QB on a well-below-average contract for the next 3 years and you wouldn't hear of it. Little ironic....

thats b/c his contract was top 10, not 15th or lower. And we disagreed on if he was above average. His stats say he's well above average, but there are questions on if those are legit or not(by the raiders fans). I think I conceded at the time if he came here and those numbers are legit it was a good deal, if they weren't then it would be a bad one.
There is no question on if Danny is an above average ILB, the question is his health; I think his contract only has 14mil in guarantees, probably 90% in the first 2 years, so I would imagine most of the contract is in playtime incentives. But it's a guess, won't know until the details come out. If his contract has incentives for 14+ games and he doesn't hit, and the aav drops its not such a bad deal. Devil is in the details.
What I'm really intersested in is if they try and keep KPL b/c he played just as well as Nick K did before he got hurt, or if they go w/a rookie ILB. If they do that I think that might be a 2nd round pick

I know which of these guys I'd rather keep.
Oy. Ok...except Kwiatkowski doesn't play outside linebacker...he plays middle linebacker. So thats nice that you would rather create a new hole in order to keep a player who's not as good as Trevathan and will cost more, but I'm glad you're not our GM. And I'm gonna guess kwiatkowski gets more than 10 because there aren't a lot of MLB's on the market.

I think they should and WILL try to re-sign KPL, completely agree. He was a solid backup and STer. ILB was the strongest position group on the team last year--the Bears had 3, maybe even 4, players that were legit quality starters. They should be fine there for 2020.
Regarding the other, I'll say it once again: There's only 32 starting QBs in the NFL at any one time. Eliminate those that are temporary placeholders only (Fitzmagic, etc). Eliminate those still on their rookie contracts (a lot) The remaining group are the "established starters" for lack of a better term. They're the ones that were good enough, and healthy enough, to be re-signed/extended.
Among that latter group, Carr is dirt cheap comparatively. I listed all of them and their average cap hits going forward (Carr is locked up for 3 more seasons at a fixed rate).
He's really cheap when you consider that the dead cap from his signing bonus stays on Oakland's books. If he somehow ended up a Bear this offseason, his cap hit to Chicago going forward would be about $18m/yr over the next 3 seasons. That is a VERY TEAM FRIENDLY NUMBER for a STARTING QB OFF HIS ROOKIE CONTRACT.
Now, if you want to argue that Carr sucks or wouldn't be a "good fit" or that Trubisky is gonna suddenly light the league on fire or whatever, that's fine. That's a completely different argument.
I'm merely pointing out that, since Carr-Bears rumors have been floated, he has an very economical contract looking at his peer group.

Well, I can say a few things about all this. First, Kwiatkowski could play outside linebacker better than Floyd does. So, "dropping back in coverage" is supposed to be Floyd's job. Kwiatkowski can do that better than him. He can also shed blockers and make tackles on running plays better than Floyd. But that wasn't my point. He is just an all-around better football player than Floyd. As far as the money goes, what I read is that $10 million is about what it will take to keep him, which we can afford by either redoing Floyd's contract for less money, or otherwise just let him go FA. As for "holes", I say we ALREADY have a hole at OLB -- Floyd! And there are three or four ways to fill it to end up with somebody who can play that position as well or better than Floyd. Paying him $13 million is "good money chasing bad" at this point. I want the Bears to play hardball with him.
