Tunsil wants to hit 20M barrer as the highest paid Olineman.

Dak wants 34/35M as a very good but not great franchise QB.

Let's face it peeps, we are entering a new era in sports. The NFL is gonna make a shit ton of money and it is going to cost even more to retain our own guys.

Of course, the wildcard here is how Mitch plays this year.

This is why the draft is going to become the life-blood of a winning franchise. You are going to have to have a model like Belichick where you stack comp draft picks and then use them wisely. You will NOT be able to keep all of your veteran players. It's not financially possible. If you have to let players go, then you have to have a constant flow of high-level talent coming in to your roster through the draft.

Pace loves to give away our draft picks. Like he did with Mitch (crazy move). Those draft picks are pure gold in the hands of a GM who can recognize talent well. Add in additional comp draft picks each year and just keep bringing in players to back-fill as you have to let players walk.

Dak Prescott wants $34-million? Hey, he was a 4th round draft pick. I'd be doing the Belichick thing and draft a QB every other year like he does. When Brady was suspended for 4 games they just trotted out the draft kid and kept winning. He lets them walk (like Garoppolo and the others) and reaps yet MORE draft picks. This past year I watched when they trotted out their rookie QB late in a game. The kid had ran the offense well. I think riczaj01 is on to something in that other thread. I think this ever-escalating QB pay scale is going to level out a bit for the 2nd tier and below guys. Sure, the elite QBs will always get paid. But the mediocre guys I don't think will continue to command crazy salaries. If I'm Dallas I'm not paying Dak that kind of money.

I think that the draft will become even more valuable as we move forward, and if you can't hit at a high percentage in the draft and are forced to "buy" your talent on the open market, then you can't sustain that model and win consistently over the years. I'm going to be pretty ticked off if Pace continues to deal away our draft picks as we move forward. Here's a novel idea. Use your own draft picks to draft your own talent (Dak was a 4th round pick). Draft well and prosper. And stack those comp draft picks too.

Id sooner give the top OT's 17-20 mil then even an above average qb 34-35mil. Cowboys will be cut off at the knees if they give that ot Dak. Better to let him walk and get a lower qb that needs as much, or slightly more help then he does.

+1000. Now I don't think it will get to the point where teams that are lucky have to create an assembly line of franchise QB's. In the most absolute cases of necessity you could squeeze 6 years out of a great to franchise QB. You could pick up the 5th year option plus 1 FT. Then you draft again or a year earlier. But these cases are so rare.

Dak doesn't deserve to be at or near the top of the qb contracts, not that he's a bad QB, he isn't, he's above average, Dallas would be smarter to let him walk and draft a kid, or look to trade for another qb. My guess is FT. Legit elite qb's, worth every dime you make playoff runs w/them, and get to sb's. Dak, Garropolo, hasn't shown they are capable. Watson/Mahomes should get paid, prove you can make deep playoff runs/SB appearances get paid.

Teams would be really smart to have their scouts looking for qbs w/traits that meet what they need in a qb, see as you mentioned NE, and drafting them often. Need to hit in the draft though or none of it works. Pace has to continue to improve his drafts, Nagy has to be able to express the type of talent the scouts need to be looking for, and the scouts need to be able to find it.

Need to average 8-12 picks a draft also. Your odds aren't good w/less then 7 picks and 1 in each rd, it also limits flexibility in the draft.

I agree with all of that, but especially that last part. More is better in this case. Belichick whiff's on picks too. Even the best GMs and scouts miss on kids. But this is where it helps having those comp picks.

Pace had what, 5 draft picks last year? That makes it pretty tough on yourself. 2017 was a 5 draft pick year too.

To put this into perspective, Belichick had 7 draft picks IN JUST THE FIRST 4 ROUNDS last year, and 10 picks total. He had 5 picks in the rounds 1-3. I'm always amazed with how he lets top tier guys go out the door, and just reloads... well, you can do that when you have so many picks and you know what you're doing with them.

Pace was a rookie GM here, so I am 100% understanding that there is a learning curve that comes with that kind of hire. But he does need to learn as he goes along. And I get it, that none of this is easy. But that's the gig as a GM.

You have this notion that if you somehow refuse to acknowledge the reality of the market (what starting QBs off their rookie contract ACTUALLY COST based on supply and demand), that by magic a replacement just as good will "appear".

I'll make a bet with you right now--someone, probably Dallas but SOMEONE, will pay Dak > $30m AAV this offseason. Care to take the other end of that wager?

Constantly re-inventing the wheel here. The FT costs $27M this year (minimum, before Mahomes drives it higher).

Usually, not always but USUALLY, a team uses the FT to stop a player from leaving in FA and to buy them more time to work out a long-term deal. If Dallas does FT him, they will probably work out a deal with him by Labor Day.

If they spend their 1st round pick on a QB, then maybe I'll believe you. Otherwise, Dak is their QB going forward one way or the other.

The last QB NE got a comp pick for was....Todd Collins in 2000.
