Nick k is a perfect example of a guy worth keeping, but not at the FA price he would likely cost to keep. NE would let guys like this walk and get comp picks.
I agree and disagree. Nick K is a perfect example in my mind of a guy you SHOULD keep. The market price for his services is THE MARKET PRICE, Ric. You pay it, hopefully get a small hometown discount, but you pay it and you keep him. The whole point of the draft is to find and develop players worthy of keeping around.
The Bears need to let Trevathan walk and that's not because he's no good. He's simply 4 years older and is coming off significant injury. He's the guy you need to let walk for a possible comp pick.
Nick K isn't an All-Pro, not saying that (though he would be a starter for many other teams), but he's solid and good football player who's been versatile and durable. Excellent STer, excellent run stuffer, reliable tackler, and he's pretty damn good at getting to the QB on blitzes. You could do way worse as a #2 ILB in a 3-4. Roq Smith will be playing next to him and he has the speed and range that is a weakness for Nick.
IMO the Bears would be really stupid to let him go.
My biggest problem with Nick K is his liability in pass coverage. In today's modern NFL, if you can't cover than teams are going to eat you alive. Let's not all forget what Rodgers did to him.
Personally I go with Trevathan for a cheaper deal and draft a guy mid to late to be Trevathan's replacement.
Can't overpay average talent. This isn't the QB position... ILB is very replaceable. Heck we found Trevathan and Freeman in FA after all.
With limited cap we need to limit how much of our cap goes to replaceable talents vs harder to find talents.. ( QB, OLB, and Tackle )...
This is why you have to be able to draft well. You can't keep everyone. You do need to have a constant flow of new draft talent coming in, so that you can survive having to let guys go like this. I get so frustrated when Ryan Pace deals away draft picks. Every one of those draft picks are pure gold in the hands of someone who is gifted at evaluating draft talent.
I love that Belichick model of always having comp picks to supplement his draft. Even if you miss on some (and he does) you still have additional picks to use. I'm gonna stroke out if Pace continues to deal away our draft picks (like he did to get Mitch). Keep your picks. Draft well. And then you can sustain winning here even when you lose guys to FA.

That is how you can sustain having a strong roster and be competitive. And I'm not saying NE is perfect. They're not. But I do like how they have gotten ahead of the curve this way. It makes financial sense. Of course, as we all know, they have had their QB settled forever - a huge asset. But I do believe this model makes good sense even without a Tom Brady. It's the way to go financially and talent wise. Young guys coming in a steady stream on rookie contracts, and then "pick and choose" who you DO pay, while letting some talented guys go.
It just blows my mind that Belichick had 7 draft picks IN JUST THE FIRST 4 ROUNDS last year, and 10 picks total. He had 5 picks in the rounds 1-3. I'm always amazed with how he lets some quality guys go out the door, and just reloads... well, you can do that when you have so many picks and you know what you're doing with them.
Pace? 2 of the last 3 years he had only 5 draft picks... and no first round pick this year. All of a sudden you're sweating bullets thinking you need to pay a guy like Nick K.

yep. Nick is a nice player to have on your team; if you don't have to compete for his contract and have it artificially raised. He's a good player, but when you have the draft down you let other teams over pay for good and draft their replacements in hopes of finding something better then good at a lower cost. But you cannot do that w/5 picks in the draft.

Nick is a guy they should have tried to extend last year, or a guy that you never let hit FA. What others are willing to pay for something doesn't mean it's a good price, or the right price for your team.
Nick is perfectly servicable, but he's not great, but he can be replaced. Sign him last year I'd be happy, get him extended before FA this year I'd be happy, let him hit FA and have his market inflated, let him walk and draft a guy. Really should have already had someone on the team to fit that role in a perfect scenerio.
I like Nick, but like you said about Dalton, he's oatmeal. You don't pay top price for oatmeal, even if someone else is.
A) With all due respect, I don't recall you saying last year that the team should have extended Kwit BACK THEN. In fact, if they had done that you would have been screaming your head off about how "overpriced" the contract was for an "unproven player".
B) Nick has been a backup and STer pretty much his entire career with the Bears thus far. He's been the #3 guy off the bench and a spot starter due to injury when it comes to defense. How many players in that role do you see get contract extensions after their 3rd year?
Answer: virtually none. Those situations occur when a player has been a starter and standout for 3 years (i.e., Eddie Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, etc). The Bears did NOT extend Kyle Fuller, a former 1st round pick, after his 3rd year because he was injured. They waited for him to prove himself in his 4th, which he did.
Nick K got a chance to play a fair bit last season, his 4th, and he played really well. So he deserves to be paid. And someone will pay him if the Bears don't.
C) Who exactly do you want to replace him with? At what cost??
D) The market price is a good price unless you have an equivalent player ready to step in for less. The Bears don't. Iggy hasn't shown a thing so far. KPL is older and is also a FA. A draft pick, very likely a late draft pick, isn't going to step into a starting role right out of the box.
Yeah if some team offers him $15m or something crazy than that's a different story and I wouldn't match, That's not gonna happen. For the realistic price he's likely to command in the market, he's a good re-sign for the Bears.
Nick K is exactly what you hope for in a day-3 draft pick--a guy that carves out a role on STs and as a backup and then shows you he's capable of starting at his position. The whole point of drafting players is that you hope they prove themselves worthy of keeping.

Actually, Kwit did pretty damn well in coverage in 2019. He was exposed more in the few opportunities he had to play defense in prior seasons.
No one is gonna claim he has the range and speed of Roquan. That's why Roq was a 1st round pick and Kwit was a 4th. But Kwit is a damn good football player who executes his assignments well (the lunchpail stuff) and also makes some nice splash plays, especially on blitzes. He freakin' BLEW UP Dalwin Cook against Minnesota....ever seen Floyd do that?
Danny T is a really good player, I agree, but he's also 4 years older and coming off injury. Smart thing would be to move on BEFORE he declines instead of waiting too long. And I doubt very much he's gonna come that much cheaper than Nick. Some team will sign him to a nice deal as a short-term bridge. He probably has 2 years tread left on the tires.
We fans all love to bitch at our GM when he drafts clunkers and players than don't work out (White, Grasu, Shaheen, etc) but now you want to let one that DID WORK OUT just walk away?

The Nick K question is actually more of a question about Trevathan. Do you believe Trevathan can keep up his level of play the next couple of years at his age? And is that a significant upgrade over Nick?
There's an argument to be made that letting Trevathan go and keeping Nick is the better play. Nick is younger and has shown to be durable. Trevathan is older and has only made it through a full season twice in his career. Is Trevathan's performance on field that much better than Nick's that those issues are acceptable?

Exactly
I love Danny T, don't get me wrong, but tough choices have to be made and you can't keep everyone (Bears have 3 ILBs who are FAs this year).
I think in this situation you go with the younger, rising player, especially your own draft pick, over the established vet who's probably at or past his peak.

I see this guy as another Amos. An average player who can look good once in a while. Nick had a total of 12.8 missed tackles vs Smith's 3.8 and Trevathan 4.1..
That is 3 times the amount that Trevathan has...
The only thing I hate less than a GM drafting high bust is giving average players big contracts.

Well it's hard to miss tackles when you don't even show up at the game.
