It looks like the Bears are going to upgrade the offense for this season so Mitch has every opportunity to play well. If he is bad this season he's clearly gone. If he has a solid season, obviously all is good and we have our franchise QB.
But what if he's neither?
What if he has an "okay" season? I understand that's pretty subjective and we can all have our idea of what that "okay" season would be. What do you want to see from him this year (minimum) to be convinced he is our future at QB? What does that kind of season performance look like to you?

You just brought up my nightmare scenario.
If Mitch performs in 2020 like he did last season, he's a goner for sure. Stick a fork in him, he's done here. If he lights it up and suddenly "clicks", the team will either FT him, 5th yr option, or negotiate a long term deal.
If it's in the middle, then it's not so easy. I would hope the team has the stones to let him walk away in FA (someone will pay him) and harvest a nice comp pick. That is predicated on getting a plausible replacement "bridge QB" at least this offseason.
Guess what? We are gonna be debating this ALL NEXT SEASON. Unless Trubisky plays one extreme or the other, there's gonna be a lot of ink spilled on this issue.
You're right--what constitutes "good enough to keep" is subjective and will be hotly debated.

I had "flashbacks" to the Jay Cutler years. He didn't suck, but he wasn't the answer either. Cutler even set some Bears records here... but that was just due to the crappy QBs who've been here over the years. He just wasn't the answer at QB... and the years rolled by.

Yep
There's so many issues. How "good" does your QB have to be to keep him? When do you cut ties and look elsewhere? Do you tank a season to get a high draft pick?
If it's just good, above average they probably gets a ft and another qb to compete against him to see what happens, which is likely what they do if he is great to he honest. I think he gets cousins dc treatment.
If Mitch is just okay then you keep bringing in competition until you can find someone better. That's really all you can do.
Of course sometimes okay is good enough. A number of teams have won the SB with okay QB play.
It's possible, yes, but difficult. Everything else has to be near perfect to pull it off.
And you certainly aren't going to be a perennial playoff team/contender with an "okay QB". That's a one-and-done scenario.
Agree about the one and done scenario. Truth be told we’ve been none and done since 85. 😀 I’d like to see us bring in a potential starter with some upside like Mariotta (sp). I pray it's not Dalton as he’s not taking us anywhere. If Mitch doesn’t improve, I think we have to reset and start anew.

At least we were contenders in the mid-to-late 80s. How many times since have we been able to make the playoffs in multiple consecutive seasons? 2005-2006 is all can recall.
I wanna be a team that is making the postseason regularly, not just making cameo appearances once every 7 years.
