Biggs believes it is not just the OL that contributed to the mess. I do believe the total failure on offense was due to more than JUST the offensive line. I believe it was a critically important contributing factor. But it was not the only factor.
LINK "A better quarterback last season would have made an offensive line that didn’t play particularly well look better. I thought the pass blocking was decent. Could it have been better? Sure. Did it create insurmountable obstacles for the quarterback? Absolutely not. It’s all interconnected, and the running game issues were a combination of line play, scheme, coaching and the running backs. There were games the Bears really didn’t even try to run the ball. The opener against the Packers and the Saints game are perfect examples. The Bears need to be more productive when they run the ball, and that’s no secret. We’ll see whether coaching changes and a potential new right guard can iron out some things. The Bears sure hope so."

When you have no TE or WR threats, or a QB that can use them, there won''t be much of a run game unless you have a sick OL or a very special RB. Forte was the closest thing we had to that, and the Bears haven't had one since; the again no one has been drafted as high as him since either.

Yeah...when the defense doesn't have to worry about threats in the passing game it makes playing the run pretty easy. And I'll tell you what...thank GOD we had Monty, or this running game would have been a TON worse! He averaged a broken tackle every 8.6 attempts...5th best in the league. He averaged 2 yards before seeing contact...one of the worst in the league, he also "evaded" 75 tackles this year. I think with a better blocking line next year he could take off.

The running game was bad, because the running game was bad.
It was bad enough that teams could stay in nickel the whole game and sometimes have 6 DBs back there. A team has to be able to run in those situations. Because no one's passing game is going to get going if the defenders can just sit in that D all day.
This team was a good running team under Fox and there certainly weren't any playmaking WRs or TEs on those teams. How did they do it? The players executed their blocks that's how. And it's not like the other teams at the time didn't know that's exactly what we were going to do. As people complained about constantly there wasn't any misdirection in play calling. Yet we still were a better running team then.
