What do you guys think about trying to draft a starting QB?

See Soul, I knew we could agree on something. As much as we probably don't agree on Cutler, this is what I've wanted the last 3-4 years, a guy that can backup Cutler and develop behind him, challenging him 2-3 years down the line. What I didn't want was Cutler going away and the Bears HAVING to take a top boom/bust qb while drafting somewhere not #1 overall.
John Elway had a rep in Denver as the QB who could never win the big one too. He lost 3 of SBs over a 4 year span in the late '80s. Then he proceeded to become basically a .500 QB averaging just over 8 wins a year for the next 7 years before he ended his career with back to back SB wins in '97 and '98. Elway is wearing a gold HOF jacket because of that and not because of the very average teams he played for from '90 - '96 and won nothing.
He played on 5 SB teams and has a higher W/L percentage in the regular season than Jay yet his career interception percentage is 3.1% vs 3.2% for Cutler. Elway's TD percentage is just 4.1% vs 4.7% for Cutler and Elway has a career QBR of 79.9 vs 86.0 for Cutler So if Elway's personal stats are in most every way the lesser of the two and yet he has a higher W/L percentage and has been to 5 more SBs don't you think that Elway may have played on some better teams with better personnel for most of his career than Cutler has? It would sure seem so.
It would also tend to indicate the neither of them were good enough all on their own to win more than half their games when the team wasn't very good. I know you think Cutler is average and you want great but to have a great QB you need great teams for him to QB. Elway isn't considered an average QB because he's in the HOF but it isn't due to his overwhelming personal stats. It's because he was lucky enough to play on some very good teams and I watched every single on of them too.
But all that aside, yes I would love to have a good young QB prospect sitting behind Cutler right now. One he could take under his wing and help learn the pro game and the Bears offense and compete with him. Because I actually believe when his current contract is up and if he's been able to win a championship he'll retire to spend time with his family and that's just 5 years off. That may be enough time to fail at finding a replacement once but not twice so we had better get moving toward it soon or maybe just maybe Shaw might be that guy.
