Most lock drafts I'm seeing have Pace going Edge and TE in the second. That would preclude seriously going for a QB in the draft I assume.
I'm seeing two options then.
(1) Mitch as starter, vet back up not expected to challenge for job right out of camp. IE not the Rivers/Dalton types.
(2) Experienced starter brought in as competition for Mitch, so Mariota type unless Rivers/Dalton types don't demand a big contract.
Am I reading the tea leaves correctly?
After thinking about this for a few weeks, and calming down a bit after the disappointing season, it seems to me that Pace and Nagy can save their jobs - even if Trubisky busts this season. If and only if they have a viable and solid exit plan from the Trubisky era that could kick in mid season 2020 if needed.
Will Pace and Nagy be prepared, or will they fumble the season away?
Trubisky may turn it all around this year and be a decent QB. But only a total fool would think he's not in danger of busting this season. Consequently, Pace/Nagy would be fools to not have a QB option for "Plan B" that can be rolled out THIS SEASON if necessary to save this season. It's going to have to be a reasonable option (not a Mike Glennon type fiasco). If Pace doesn't show he has the ability to do this, then if Trubisky is gone, then Pace and Nagy will be out the door too - for failing to prepare for the very real possibility of Trubisky busting this year.
2019 was tough to endure, but fans (some) will forgive Pace/Nagy if they see they are reasonably competent in 2020. The Trubisky bust will be hard to swallow but fans will - if and only if they see that Pace (in particular) has done his due diligence in preparing for a Trubisky bust in 2020.
I mean, can you imagine what it would be like to have to watch 3-point game production for this offense AGAIN this year? And they then trot out a Glennon or Chase type of QB to take over to save the season... and they crap the bed too?
There HAS to be a viable 2020 Trubisky exit plan waiting in the wings for this season. JMO.
At QB, this offseason has to be about getting a Plan B in place (note: Daniel and Bray were NOT a viable Plan B last year and both are gone now anyways). Mitch gets the nod to start the season and hopefully he does well enough then Plan B doesn't need to be executed. If he fails, we will need that Plan B to take over as a placeholder until drafting another QB high up in the 2021 draft.
That's where we are at.
