Interesting article. I'm not sure I blame Nagy for Mitch failing, but thought I'd post a snippet of the article here for folks to follow the link to read it in its entirety. Do you blame Nagy for how Mitch has regressed?
LINK NFL coach has theory about why Trubisky is struggling Mitchell Trubisky has taken a major step back in his third season, and at least one NFL coach seems to think Bears head coach Matt Nagy deserves most of the blame for that.
Rich Eisen said on “The Rich Eisen Show” this week that he spoke with a trustworthy NFL coach who has a Super Bowl ring and asked him what the problem is with Trubisky in Chicago. The coach, who chose to remain anonymous, essentially said Nagy called so many gimmick plays last season that Trubisky never learned how to play basic NFL football.
“The coach used all of these gimmicks last year and the rest of the league has sniffed it out, and Trubisky does not know how to do the basics because it was so gimmicky last year,” Eisen said the coach told him. “When it comes to going through regular reads and progressions like base football, he can’t do it and isn’t ready to do it.

I agree that Nagy's gimmicky playcalling has caught up with him. The league figured him out and the stuff that generally worked last year hasn't worked even a little bit this year. And Nagy hasn't been able to adjust to everyone else's adjustments. He looks as lost as a HC as Trubisky does as a QB.
Whether that stuff "ruined" Trubisky or he was destined to fail regardless is something I guess we won't know for a while. But I do think Nagy IS responsible for the offense as a whole being a clown college all year. It started right out of the chute week 1 with penalties, missed assignments, confusion, poor playcalling, unpreparedness, and so on. Even though poor QB play is the biggest factor, virtually everyone on O has regressed or underperformed this season and its not like there have been a ton of injuries either (I'd guess the Bears O has been healthier than league average through the first half).
Gotta put a lot of that on the coaching staff. The O isn't as stacked as the D no question but still that's not an excuse. Chi may not have the O talent that New Orleans, Green Bay, and KC has, but it has enough. Enough to field a roughly league-average offense anyway. And that's all that was needed--league average--to get this team into the postseason with a shot to make a run. I would say the O-talent on this team is considerably better than what we had under Fox and Lovie but it has underperformed massively.
Nagy's decision to not play his starters virtually at all in the preseason looks really stupid now, doesn't it? Maybe it wouldn't have mattered but you can't say they were "ready" week 1 either.
I actually agree. I said it before and say it again, but Nagy is a huge reason for Mitchells struggles.
You can sure see flashes of talent at times with Trubs. I honestly don't know what to think about him. My gut feeling is that there are multiple reasons for his struggles and one is probably Nagy. I don't know how much of a factor Nagy has been though.
One positive in all of this is that if Trubisky somehow can overcome this rough season, he should be one tough dude mentally as his career moves forward. I am very interested in watching him play these last 8 games. It could be that even if this season continues to be bad, maybe Mitch can grow and mature for 2020. If the team can fix the other things that are broken and go into 2020 with most of them fixed, then perhaps Mitch can have that breakout year we all hope for. I'm not saying that WILL happen. I'm just saying it COULD happen - and we should all be hoping it happens.

I think you bring in a vet QB to compete with Mitch for 2020 and draft one on day 3 as well (basically replacing Daniel and Bray). Exercise Trub's 5th year option (it can be rescinded except for injury). Then you take another shot next season. After that, you can't kick the can down the road anymore and you gotta make a final decision.

This. But we have to fix the O Line as well. Doesn't matter who our QB is with this crew.

I'd be in favor of spending a 2nd on an OL, pref OT. The other 2nd has to go to OLB.

That is reasonable because it doesn't go to either extreme. In fact, I would have no problem if the Bears saw a guy fall to them in that 2nd round and drafted a QB there. Not to replace Mitch next year but why not add an asset like that? This is exactly what the Patriots do and I like it. If Mitch turns out okay, you still have a solid backup. If Mitch doesn't work out in 2020, then for 2021 you may have a youngster worth giving a shot to as a replacement. Worst case you should have a solid backup either way.

Bears don't have the draft capital to "go to the extreme" regardless.
Looking at the big picture: Bears have 3 QBs on the roster--Trub, Chase, & Bray. Bray is in his last year of PS eligibility and is a FA. I'm assuming he will be gone and besides he nothing but a deep backup anyway. Daniel can be released this offseason netting ~ $7m in cap savings which is a total no-brainer. A) We are gonna need that $ and B) he's a 33 yo vet backup who's ceiling is #2 at best.
Bears are gonna have to (and should) replace 2 of 3 their QBs this offseason. Mitch has one more year on his contract and will (likely) be gone after that. That means replacing 3 QBs in all likelihood within 2 years.
When he first took the job, Ryan Pace talked about "drafting a QB every year". That may be a bit much but I think every team, especially if they don't have a Rodgers or a Brees or a Brady, should be drafting a QB at least every two years. Ryan Pace has drafted only 1 in 5 years.
They need to get a vet QB this offseason who is at least a plausible starting competitor for Mitch. Those two guys battle it out for #1/#2. And they should draft a day 3 QB to compete with some camp arm/UDFA for the #3 position. If Trubisky balls out in 2020 and becomes the franchise starter we all hoped for, hey great, there's no need to draft another QB until 2022 or so. If not, you let him walk in FA after the 2020 season, harvest a comp pick, and try to shoot for a replacement in the 2021 draft when we actually have a 1st round pick. And you KEEP DRAFTING QB until you get it right.
