Yeah, with Patterson playing a hybrid role as receiver, running back, and return guy I think we carry an extra receiver and 1 less back.
Seems logical to me. Do we need to waste a 5th RB spot on a FB? Don't think so. Burton barely played last year anyway. Stash Nall on the PS as a 5th.
2 QBs 4 RBs 4 TEs 7 WRs 8 OLs
?
I see a great amount of versatile players (both starters and depth) on this team, which allows us the ability to keep that many players, easily. Hell, making a quick spreadsheet depth chart of locks and quality guys with good depth, I came out to 51 players with those numbers on offense. There’s going to be room for a handful of "flex" guys on this O, for sure.
Here's what I wrote over at Purple Pain about Riley Ridley:
#13: Riley Ridley, Georgia
Summary
A lot of Ridley's draft stock comes from projections. He never topped 560 yards at Georgia and was a non-factor at times for the offense. However, Georgia did spend a large chunk of their plays running the ball, and Ridley probably declared a year too early for the draft. Scouts love Ridley's hands, as his 4.4% drop rate is one of the best of this class. Teams like his route running ability, which is his best way of getting open, since his athletic stats don't match up well to the rest of the draft class. He was a non-factor as a deep receiver in 2018. Ridley could use a year or two on the bench, and with some good coaching I could see him developing into a solid #2 WR. I'd rather spend a 4th rounder on him, but I've read teams like him in the 2nd round.
I'm not as high on Ridley as many other scouts were, but the 4th round was the right place for him to go. I could see him replacing Taylor Gabriel in 2020.
Just an interesting clip of Ridley working with Ochocinco and TO in their receiver camp. Informative and entertaining.
both are turds off the field, but you cannot say they weren't amazing WR's at the NFL level. they took the craft serious. To this day the most impressive nfl probowl skills test was watching Ocho sit in the middle of 5 or 6 football machines and go around catching mid, low, high multiple times and never dropping one. it was amazing.

Also interesting to hear them speak of some of the greats that preceded them in the NFL with the appropriate respect. Both were real divas in their day but it seems they really understand the amount of work needed to go into their craft and the impressive skills that some of the legends in the league had.

The Ridley (and the Whyte pick) pick are two I'm still not happy about. I don't believe that the concept of "best draft value" actually matters in terms of wins/losses but instead is an invented gimmick designed to prop up the draft industry.
My biggest concern with the Ridley pick (not so much the Whyte as he has more future down the line considering the players under contract who can be let go) is where he plays in the future. He's not taking Robinson's spot, he's not TGab downfield speed, and Miller was just drafted and showed high end potential. If its just a case of fixing the back of the WR roster why use a forth?
If Ridley ends up in the Wims spot of inactive on game days, wouldn't it have been better to draft a DB in 4th round, and take the inactive WR later? Personally I'd rather see the team invest a second season in Wims unless they know already that Wims isn't going to progress much further.

Just IMO.
RB: Dmonty, Cohen, Davis, Whyte, Nall(likely cut or moved to H-back/fb role) WR: Arob, Tgab, Miller, Ridley, Wims, Patterson(rb also)
Am I missing anyone important? 4 rbs and 6 wr's is pretty standard
No one on that list is likely to be inactive on game day, except for maybe Wims.

I think the UDFA Hall (the speedster) makes the roster. That's me MSU at this point. I don't really have a problem with the pick, just surprised a little bit.
Relatedly, looking down the road (in a best case scenario where everyone develops into NFL quality) Wims replaces Robinson Hall replaces TGab Ridley backs up Miller
is that about right? (talking about putting the cart before the horse)
mpbears listed the roster like this:
2 QBs 4 RBs 7 WRs 4 TEs 8 OL
25 on OFF. Some will have to be STers (Bellamy/Cunningham/Brown all gone)

Going to be a fun summer/TC/PS for sure.
If anyone were to replace Arob on this roster, it likely would be Riley who is the same possession guy. Wims still has a lot to prove imo, Riley is far capable of taking on Arobs roll if he were to go down this year. We'll have to see what happens w/Hall, could be that Wims gets put back on PS if Hall is the real deal.
4 TE's would be Burton, Shaheen, BB and Dax, which would mean Nall, as the 4 rb's are also set and HBack/FB were his only shots to make the team, mizzel is all but gone also.
But again it's all opinion at this point. Bears got a lot of ST's capable guys to replace them w/their late round/udfa guys.

I'm merely speculating, don't claim to have insider knowledge. The O has an embarassment of riches now. We have come a long way from just 2-3 years ago when players like Bellamy, Inman, Mizzell, Cunningham, Mariani, Meredith, Burton, and Sims were on the roster.
WR
Robinson, Miller, Gabriel, Patterson (also will get some rushing snaps/carries), & Ridley are locks to make the roster. That's 5 right there.
Assuming they keep 6 (which is typical), that leaves Wims, EHall, and MHall fighting for the final spot.
Obviously if they choose to keep 7, 2 of those 3 are in. Tanner Gentry is gone 99% chance. Dude couldn't make the team in 2 seasons so bye-bye.
The Ridley pic is a Robinson backup and Wims hedge. I think ARob survives the cap cuts coming next year but Pace gave himself options in case of injury to Robinson or Wims not progressing.
Doesn't take a genius to figure out that signing EHall as a priority UDFA is an obvious Gabriel hedge. He's a cheap replacement for 2020 that allows you to release TGab and save $$$. Problem will be protecting him this year. If he looks like crap in preseason, prob can stash on PS no problem. If he shows promise, EHall is either gonna have to be added to the 53 or get the IR-redshirt. Look for him to have a mysterious "ankle sprain" or "muscle pull" around Labor Day so the Bears can protect him for next year and avoid poaching.
Yeah I think Marvin Hall is in trouble and may not make the roster.
RB
Run DMC (Davis, Monty, Cohen) are obvious locks.
4th spot looks like a battle between Whyte and Nall and the former has the advantage cuz of STs. Loser gets stashed on the PS.
I can't see us keeping 5 RB/FB again this year given that Burton barely played and Nagy's O doesn't really need a FB.
