For those still not sold on using our first pick on a running back, look at it like this:
2019 Chicago Bears Draft Picks R1: Khalil Mack R2: Anthony Miller R3: David Montgomery
Also, if Montgomery is The Human Pinball and Cohen is The Human Joystick does that officially make our RB group an arcade?
The problem people will have with it is that nebulous concept of draft capital and draft value. Other than those shifting definition concepts, its 100% correct. You should read the idiots over at windycitygrid. Apparently Pace has now spent 5+ draft picks propping up Mitch (including "a king's ransom" for Montgomery)+ FA/ money/cap-space and should just admit he was wrong on Mitch and move on. One guy argued that the Bears as is are 9-7 with Daniel playing QB, and by going all in on DEF moving forward, the Bears would be in perfect position for multiple SBs.
Of course after posting that I'm afraid I just gave a certain poster here his next talking points for the future.
We still do not have a HOF kicker so take that windycitygrid!!!!!

i would like for the bears to be in a spot where they don't need to trade up. we are getting there (getting real depth). the WR we just picked up and this RB make me real excited for the bears O next season.
it's going to be really tough to defend. compare our receiving core to Fox's last year and it's night and day. Nagy and Pace are doing the smart thing: building the O around the QBs strengths. late rounds should let us know what the bears think about all the young rotational guys we have on DL. hoping we can get a decent TE and OL prospect.
Sources Tell Us "That's my guy! If he gets with the right team, he's going to be the best running back to come out of this class and you won't have to draft him early either." -- Scouting director with AFC team"
I think this guy is a PERFECT fit for a need we had on the Bears. I watched his video film last night and was so impressed by the unique set of attributes he brings to the team. Here is what stood out to me as I watched him. He is a powerful force running between the tackles and has a great instinct for following his blocking in doing this. He just has a nose for finding a path through D-lines. That will be a priceless weapon... he's not at all like Cohen, and as much as I love having Cohen's talent, we did lack that guy who could pick up the hard/brutal short yardage to move the chains or punch in a red-zone TD. This is that guy.
He blocks EXTREMELY well picking up blitzers to protect the QB. That is going to be extremely valuable for Mitch Trubisky.
Finally, my favorite part of his game is watching him catch passes. He has the hands of a talented wide receiver. I don't think you can teach this, at least not at his level. Howard tried and tried to improve in this area, and I believe he did improve. But Howard never had the gifted hands, the soft hands, that Montgomery showcases. He is beautiful to watch catching the ball - and once he secures the ball, he is a WEAPON getting yards after the catch.
I think we got the #1 best fit for the Bears with this RB pick. We are a better team because of it. He is a day-1 starter in our rotation of RBs. I am excited with this pick.
The more I read the more I really like the player, agree there JABF.
No one can accuse Ryan Pace of being passive or timid and letting "his guys" get drafted just ahead of him like Emery did with Aaron Donald and Leo Williams. The flip side of the coin however is Pace has been in effect buying stocks on margin. If he's wrong about "his guy", you haven't just blown the pick but also the other pick(s) you traded away to move up. We missed out on some good DB prospects and on OLB Winovich to get Monty.
I hope Monty is a Kareem Hunt/David Johnson type talent cuz, after drafting WR in round 4, our depth in the secondary is pretty weak right now.

I totally agree. Pace has to hit on these guys, and I do feel uncomfortable having such limited draft stock available. You simply can't sustain that model over time. Nobody can. I'm just hoping he gets it right with these picks this year and then we can start to have more draft picks (that New England Patriot model). But I figure "it is what it is" for now. Just hoping Pace and our scouts got it right this year.

Obviously Pace is gets cut some slack since he did get us turned around from worst to first last year but yeah his drafting-on-a-credit-card style is starting to make me nervous.
When moving up to get someone works out, they call it "being bold & aggressive" or "having confidence in your decision". When it doesn't work, you will start hearing things like "reckless", "wasteful", and "not seeing the big picture". It's all just two sides of the same coin.
I wasn't excited about trading up either, however when you consider Sanders and Henderson were just drafted I don't fault Pace for moving up to make sure he got his guy. It is highly likely he would not have been there when our turn to pick came up, and he sure as heck wouldn't have been there in the 4th. I don't know why we get surprised by this anymore either...by now we should expect Pace to be aggressive to get his guy when he has a conviction on him. Gone are the days of hoping Aaron Donald falls to us and he gets picked one spot in front of us.

Well, you may be right on here. I said I wanted a RB with size and power to carry on short yardage and do some blocking. This guy might be the ticket.
Great breakdown of DMonty. Wanna talk about a guy that didn't have an OL blocking for him; getting hit in the backfield? Watch this vid, that ISU OL was every bit as bad as that OL that Forte and Cutler spent most of their career behind. There are so many times he should have been hit for no gain or a loss, and he makes something out of nothing. Also note the breakdown has ISU vs a lot of ranked teams and mostly known football programs, no St Mary's school of the blind that he's running against. I'm not sure he'll know what to do w/himself w/this Bears OL actually giving him holes and room to work with more often then not.
