This will have a huge impact on Callahan's resigning
So that's roughly $8.7m AAV which is about where we thought Callahan would fall. As much as I like Bryce, I'd be tempted to let him walk and re-sign Amos instead who's younger, cheaper, and less injury-prone.
With the amount of time a NFL defense spends in sub packages and in nickel, you basically have 3 starting CBs so resigning Callahan or signing someone as good is as much a priority as resigning Amos.

And 100% of the time you have 2 safeties on the field. Safeties have to prevent the big play while nickel backs are generally preventing short gains.
I've always liked Callahan but he's been injured a lot and Amos has shown to be extremely reliable over his career. I also wonder how much of Jackson's freelancing is due to knowing Amos is going to be where he needs to be. If Jackson can't trust the guy next to him maybe he won't be as much of a ball hawk.
This is not to say it's obvious who should be the priority to sign but I don't think it's quite so black and white.

I'm not saying you sign one over the other. Just that you need 3 starting quality CBs along with 2 starting safeties. And if we do not sign Callahan, we have a huge hole. Just like if we don't resign Amos. It is not an either/or situation in my mind. IMO we need both (or an equivalent quality replacement).

I get it. Teams also have 2 safeties on the field virtually every play as well.
Look, I'd love to keep both Callahan and Amos but I'm realistic and don't see how that's possible. We also need to re-sign Lynch or Acho (or another OLB) and extend Whitehair.

This is why I posted the thread about Pace possibly releasing Long. Not that I don't like Long. Just that I can see how he may end up as the expendable vet on the roster.

Seeing as FA and the draft are not going to amount to much this year, it will be interesting to see what Pace has in mind for the current roster. The cap space we have as of now is probably adequate only to re-sign Amos or Callahan and maybe extend Whitehair. The only ways I see to free up more space is to release Acho and/or Long (or restructure his current contract). Pace has some tough choices to make as the low hanging fruit (Sims) has already been picked.

Assuming that Pace has FA and/or Day 3 draft pick alternatives in mind for either or both Amos and Callahan, he could be counting on going down the compensatory pick route. Because if both Callahan and Amos get signed to big $$$ contracts by other teams, we could end up with 2 3rd round picks in the 2019 or 2020 draft (I am not sure in what draft the compensatory picks are awarded).

If the Bears are awarded any compensatory picks it won't be until 2020. There's a year lag between FA and comp picks.
