Angle? Not quite sure why you think there is one. He's a 3-4 guy, he runs an aggressive style of defense, he's a great teacher/developer of young talent...
And his only good resume point is he was a Defensive backs coach and DC for a defense that is, and will always be, compared to the 85 Bears and other great defenses of All-Time... ...but Bal didn't win it all until he left for Indy as a HC in charge of it all, and that defense went to shit over time LINK
I'll gladly eat crow if this works out lol but i'm skeptical at this point that he can do anything without an all-star roster...Indy's last year for him as HC is just embarrassing on all levels after 6 years of being HC...Cleveland Brown embarrassing lol
being a HC and being a DC 2 different things. He might not be able to do much w/out an all star roster; but he has an all star roster in Chicago so I'm not sure hte issue here.

As far as his stint as an HC with Indy, he had a decent record. What happened was mostly due to the GM.

My guess is Pagano will look at the DC job here as a springboard back into contention for a HC gig in 2 or 3 years. So look for a lot of effort in making the Bears defense better in any way possible.
I found an analysis of Pagano's time as a defensive assistant and as a DC. Each time his unit (defensive backs, LBs or entire defense) took a significant statistical step forward over the previous coach. So I am very hopeful we will have a solid defense for the near future.

Can anyone in this league do anything without talent? How were Fangio's defenses in Houston, Indy, and Carolina? How was Baltimores defense the year after Pagano left? Yes, they won the Superbowl...but how did the defense perform? They got worse... a lot worse actually. As for Indy...they never drafted any defensive talent high in the draft except for Bjorn Werner. I don't care who you are...you need talent to win, thats just the way it is.

That was my thought too, Ric. He will have a stacked roster to run the defense. He has had good success on defense. He has a lot of experience. He has produced one of the top D units before. He relates well with players and is supposed to be a good teacher on D (always a plus).
Vic is gone. Nothing we can do about that. We need to just "deal" with that fact.
And think about this a bit. The Bears probably could have picked about any DC replacement their heart desired - the DC job is that good here. They chose to pick Pagano. They undoubtedly see him as the best of the best to hand the D to. I'm good with that.

I'm not trying to say they are, and hopefully this is just a knee jerk reaction by me and he works out great.
I just don't see the reasoning for them going this route...I don't hate the hire, just trying to find the silver lining that translates onto the football field.
What i really like about the hire, is obviously his knowledge of the 3-4 lol would hate to see them try and switch back to a 4-3...but more importantly I think the chemistry will be awesome between the coaches and hopefully that resonates to the team.
It's on the field thoughts that make me skeptical...Fangio had a long resume of being a DC in the NFL with a loaded team before he came to Chicago...Pagano has only been a DC for one year in the NFL with one of the best ever loaded teams.
Which he has here! i get that as well...i just don't see the resume that says THIS is the guy...only time will tell and i hope he surprises me.

Some have higher ceilings vs being reliable on talent for their scheme to work.

Lovie is a great example of that. So is Martz.
Really? How so? I don't care who you are...you need talent for a scheme to work.

What was on Nagy's resume to say "THIS is the guy"? Here are Fangio's defenses:
Defe Defe Year Tm Role Tms Yds Pts 1995 CAR DC 30 7 8 1996 CAR DC 30 10 2 1997 CAR DC 30 15 13 1998 CAR DC 30 30 27 1999 IND DC 31 15 17 2000 IND DC 31 21 15 2001 IND DC 31 29 31 2002 HOU DC 32 16 20 2003 HOU DC 32 31 27 2004 HOU DC 32 23 15 2005 HOU DC 32 31 32 2011 SFO DC 32 4 2 2012 SFO DC 32 3 2 2013 SFO DC 32 5 3 2014 SFO DC 32 5 10 2015 CHI DC 32 14 20 2016 CHI DC 32 15 24 2017 CHI DC 32 10 9 2018 CHI DC 32 3
Notice in the places he didn't have great talent his defenses weren't that good. Surprising eh? I think we'll end up really liking Pagano. I know I've wanted someone who is more aggressive and more innovative in their blitz scheme. Well shit...that's Pagano to a T! Take a look at some of his blitz schemes and think about the players he has at his disposal and tell me it doesn't excite the crap out of you!
