Former players are who I am thinking of, and in mast cases with a QB, that's when you hear. Very uncommon to say anything about your current QB. And memory is not good but I thought there were some insinuations a few years back by then current members which is as strong as it's going to get. I'm not advocating getting rid of him but rather suggesting that a new era in bears offense probably won't happen until he is gone and only if we make the right pick
Well let's face it offense has seldom been the Bears long suit but to me this is the best collection of skills players and QB we've had since the early to mid '80s so I don't see any reason why they can't be productive enough to win a championship once they get an OL healthy and stabilized.
If Cutler ever lacked anything in leadership it was because he himself didn't believe in the offenses he was being asked to run or the plays he was given. I think that was especially true under Tice and to a certain degree under Trestman as well.
But I can't think of one player past or present whose ever questioned his toughness, competitiveness, or desire to win. That was all media manufactured garbage. I'm not gonna count on the next guy to come along to be any better because I've seen 50 plus years of worse far too many times to think that somehow we'll be blessed with the next Tom Brady or Payton Manning.
you know what? you're right, we could very easily end up much worse. Here's to successful season!

Cutty was never THE problem w/the Bears O, but he was part of THE problem. In the end he's an average qb, has been for awhile, and you can do better(w/the qb you almost need to) then average. Average shouldn't guarantee you a spot on the roster as it has for Cutty the last 2-3 years.
I was wondering how many more days it would take before we picked up these old swords of ours again. Mine was getting rusty. The ONLY thing that's ever been average or below average has been the talent he's been surrounded by and the offenses he's been asked to run.
Look at the rest of him Ric. Is his arm strength average? No Is his athleticism and mobility average? No Is is football intellect and grasp of the game average? No In fact every HC and OC he's ever had has said just the opposite. If all of that is average then I'll take it.
How can you look at the last three years and make a definitive statement about his performance when two of them were under Trestman and Kromer and neither has been a raging success since they got fired here. Trestman actually took a former SB winner and managed to make him a worse QB in his offense then he was before.
Last year for the first time in half a decade Cutler showed signs of being the QB we've all expected him to be running yet another new offense for the first time behind a crappy OL and without his best receivers most of the year. Even with all that he still managed to throw for nearly 4000 yards, halved his picks and several of those you couldn't hang on him anyway.
If we released Cutler the only thing that would prevent him from being signed by someone else the next day is the time it would take to negotiate a new contract. Jeezus sometimes I can't believe some of you actually went through all of those assclowns we had playing QB all those years and can still post like this! Is your memory that short!
Ah, much better. Now I do feel like this is home again!
Look at how the experts rank him, and i'm not talking analysts, I'm talking GM's(per usual anonomys), and scouts. They all put him in the 18-20 range now Soul. And no he's not always been surrounded by average talent, and if he was a special QB that wouldn't matter that greatly. He had Marshal, Jeffery, Bennett, Forte, for a good portion of the seasons, and the OL hasn't always been the absolute worst. He's not the most sacked qb by a long shot.
He might well get signed the next day; and that team MIGHT be better off, but they would still not make the playoffs, they would still not be closer to win a SB, b/c no team that is close is taking him b/c they already have their QB. He's had 1 playoff appearence and a .500 record in the playoffs, that's nothing to write home about for a 35 year old qb.
HA, glad you feel better. But this is one where we'll just have to agree to disagree on.
Agreed ric. We've been putting it off a couple years due to multiple other more important needs, but the time has come. QB must be addressed next year. We need our next starter lined up. I do not want to see 20 guys go through the QB turnstyle the next few years. Been there done that.

There is absolutely no guarantee you wont see it again In fact, odds are that you will

I see a smiley face, but that is a very depressing thought...
Back to Cutler... When you average Cutler's career arc out, he's been an average QB.
He posses above average intellect, movement skills, pocket presence, arm strength, hell, he can even have above average accuracy but he's never been able to put them together into a concotion better than average.
I do think, however, that his cocktails have been getting better over the last few years and maybe this year he'll mix up a special brew.

+1 The Cutler arguments about the past performances are just past history to me. I don't care about the past, but I do want to see a decent offense moving forward under the Pace/Fox regime. Maybe Jay has a few solid years left in the tank. Maybe not. But I do think it's time for the Bears to be figuring out the exit-plan for when we do move on from him. While I don't care about rehashing the past Bears QB woes, of the past many years, I do care VERY much about getting the QB thing for the future figured out. It may not be easy. But we still need to try and get a solid starter - and a halfway decent backup in place sooner rather than later. I'm gonna be hopping mad if we see Jay gone, and all of a sudden we're in crisis mode trying to figure it out in a year where we SHOULD be a solid playoff team... and instead are screwed once again. A day late and a dollar short, type of thing :-)

+1 JABF9 (It's hard not to say JABF99)
To me it's pretty simple, we get the most out of Jay while he is here and when we have someone who is either better or the staff thinks has a much higher ceiling and we let him go.

Do I really need to highlight all of the usual unsupported rumors, personal opinions lacking fact, and other nonsense here? OK I will.
In red; please tell me which scouts and GM's you've spoken with or received emails from or have ever published confirmed reports or opinions that's where they have him ranked? Ric, there are none because no one shares that info publicly. Not ever.
In green; The most he's had any of those players (except Forte) for in any sense of full production is 3 years and he's been with the Bears for 7 years. Since when did 43% become defined as a "good portion" of his career as a Bears QB? That's less than half. I don't think we even want to get into the caliber of the pass blocking he's received since he's been here. You've complained about them as loudly as anyone has. They were "mostly" not good OLs.
In purple this time; So now you're clairvoyant too? Ric this is a personal opinion not fact and you know how I feel about you using your opinions as if they were facts. That's another no no.
It's teal now right; How many other QBs have zero playoff appearances and which ones who've had more would you like to trade for? He also 33 years old not 35 and has been stuck with some pretty shitty teams over the past five years as everyone here can attest to. Cutler alone will not take a team to a championship but few QBs can.
And of course we're gonna agree to disagree. We always have and we always will until you get it right and one of these days I'm confident you will. I takes time. I understand that and I have a lot of patience. LOLOL
