Fox's approach is " bigger people beat up smaller people " - thus I believe that the 'starters' will be the biggest guys . Ain't really all that important tho cuz the rest will rotate in alot during the game and the 'smaller' quicker guys might be used more often on passing downs in an effort to try to generate more of a pass rush . I just want to see more sacks this year .
in 3-4 it does sound logical to have huge guys in the middle and fast 'little' fuc.ers like Young and Floyd comin' at you from the sides
I don't know how many DL they plan to keep but if I was compiling a list to make my final cuts from then it would look like this.
RDE; Hicks, Unrein
NT; Goldman, Sutton, Williams
LDE; Bullard, Washington Browner
That's 8 and I don't think we keep more that 6 so that means Williams and Browner probably head to the PS if we can get them through waivers. It also means that Ego is gone.
So you have your bigger two gap type DEs at RDE in Hicks and Unrein and your smaller penetrating DEs at LDE where they can also move inside to play as 3 tech DTs in four man fronts. If we can keep them healthy that a lot better looking DL than we began last year with.
That last spot will come down to sutton and ego and what they are wanting(barring an injury in the next 2 games) sutton has played mostly de and ego has done nt and de.
If they want the better of 1 positon they go with sutton if they want flexibility but less quality they go with ego.
Either way i feel bad for one bc the move from 4 3 to 3 4 fd it up for them
IMHO so far Sutton has actually proven to be the better and more versatile player. He's playing much lighter now so some of his ability to penetrate and rush have returned and while he's not the ideal size for a 2 gap NT he's short so he can keep his pad level down more easily and use his leverage to fight off blocks from taller OGs. He and Williams made a hell of a play on that goal line stop last week.
Ego was always a project. Even when Emery drafted him no one was sure how they'd play him. He's not an ideal NT and he's really not quick enough to play DE. Based on what I've seen so far his career will probably end with him becoming a backup DT in a 4-3 front because he's decent enough run stopper in a phone booth. More than that I don't see in him.
I wouldn't really disagree, but right now from what is being heard from people that watch practice only one of them is playing both positions, Ego.

Ego is certainly the better fit of the two but whenever I see him out there in a game at NT he's getting pushed out of his gap and at DE he's trailing the play or running himself out of position. I think both of them are more natural one gap DTs but of the two at least Sutton has that little burst into the backfield when needed and he's actually held up better at NT because he's shorter and stockier. At least that's what I've seen during the games.
The problem is if they only keep 5 DL both of them may be gone because if he cam stay healthy CWash is far better as a DE than either of them and if they have to Hicks or Unrein can play NT.

If CornWash stays healthy and if Bullard keeps developing at the pace he has this PS, I can see both making the 53 man roster. Both are explosive and disruptive DEs. Even if we keep 6 on the DL the only way Ego or Sutton make the team is if they can spell Goldman at NT. IMO the 4 best DEs so far are Hicks, Unrein, CornWash and Bullard. And the sleeper here is Terry Williams. If he gets a chance against the first team against KC and looks good, I can see both Ego and Sutton getting cut.
They are both good guys but I see them being better on 4-3 teams.

I like Williams too and he's more the size you want at NT but he also has PS eligibility the others don't so that gives them another option for him right now provided they can get him through waivers.
Just on the basis of what I've seen so far it looks to me like CWash has finally "arrived" at his calling and he's also played well on STeams so he has an edge there as well. We know they won't cut Bullard and Unrein is pretty much a Fox favorite so I don't see him losing out either.
I'm gonna try to watch Ego and Sutton more this week to see how they handle stuff. I know for a fact that Sutton has not looked at all good playing that RDE spot in the 3-4 but he survived last year playing the LDE spot. Since Browner also has PS eligibility it's probably down to Ego or Sutton if they keel one more DL.

I agree, the upcoming game is critical for all these guys.

Jeremy Stoltz has been reporting that C. Washington has worked as a rotational player with the 1s all week. Good news for him. Still, I think he needs another strong, injury free showing this week to cement his place. Browner's probably out despite flashing last week. I'd still expect big things from him though in PS3 due to his lack of PSquad eligibility. He's playing for a job somewhere. Brad Biggs pointed out that we only carried 5 DL into the season last year. However, one of those 5 was Jeremiah Ratliff who could play NT and DE. I, like many here, don't see that versatility from anyone save Eddie and Sutton. We need a BU NT. My money's on Sutton as he can play both. That leaves us with 6 DL.

Why wouldn't he have PS eligibility? He's a 2nd year guy but he only played in 3 games in his entire career back in 2014. I'm not clear on why he's ineligible for the PS.

Good question. I don't know the rules behind PS eligibility but I've read multiple reports expressing he's not eligible. Here's one by Mark Potash of the Chicago Sun Times: "Browner still is on the fringe of the roster behind back-ups Will Sutton and Ego Ferguson with no practice-squad eligibility remaining. But he’s making it a tough decision by making plays in limited reps, with particular short-yardage/goal-line effectiveness. Browner had another batted pass in Tuesday’s practice — continuing his growing momentum.
“Right now I feel more determined than ever,” Browner said, “because I’ve finally gotten an opportunity to prove myself and not be behind somebody great like J.J. Watt [with the Texans] and I’m able to show the whole world my talents.”
