Facing off against the Packers in a Sunday Night Primetime match-up provides coach Nagy with an incredible opportunity to start his career off right. If the Bears can come in and win, it will go a long way to ensuring Nagy has the support of the players and the fans and it will build some nice momentum.
I do think winning that game changes the outlook of the season. It will set the tone in Halas Hall. With a youthful roster who believes in the new guy, I think it could launch the team forward in great fashion.
Losing that game can have the opposite effect - ESPECIALLY if it's an ugly Trestmanesque loss.
The first major milestone for the Bears, in achieving relevancy again in the NFL, is to win their division. Division championships again. It seems like it has been forever since we were champions. While nobody expects us to win against GB in this opening game of Nagy's career here, nonetheless it would be a significant win. It would be prime evidence that we now have a team capable of beating the big boys in the division.
I wouldn't just write it off as a lucky aberration if we won. I think that IF we win, it means we have a team ready to play with the big boys now... and can beat them. Not saying we would go on to 6-0 in the division. But it sure would indicate we're no longer the 0-6 deadbeat doormats of the NFCN anymore.
If we lose, hey, nobody expected us to win anyway. But if we win, I believe it means there's hope for something better than an 8-win season this year. JMO.
Personally I don't think we're gonna know much 'til we get through camp and the preseason and how we manage to keep our starters and primary backups healthy will have a huge impact on that.
One thing I do expect is with this new staff our depth will be more prepared to fill in without a major loss in effectiveness than Fox's trite "next man up" BS when his next man up was no where near prepared to take over at least not on offense.
No one can truly say how that GB will come out if only because it's a GB vs Bears game and while the odds makers and media will always have their predictions these games are often less certain than any other game on the schedule.
What we want most to avoid is a major league ass kicking to open with. That in itself will be a reversal of a trend.
