Nope. Not a big enough fan to use a 3rd round pick on a rental we'd need to sign to an extension or lose. If he was a FA I wouldn't be opposed to signing him but he's never played up to his draft status enough to give up a pick like that for him.
EDIT: I'll also add that the author is way oversold on Ray. He's promoting him like he's a perennial sackmeister and he's simply not that good and was never a realistic #7 overall pick. He's not anywhere near as good a fit as this guy believes.
Not saying he's the real deal and we need to go get him, I'm simply pointing out a few numbers just for the sake of argument.
Leonard Floyd: 22 games played, 11.5 sacks, 47 tackles | 0.52 sacks per game, 2.14 tackles per game Aaron Lynch: 44 games played, 15 sacks, 64 tackles | 0.34 sacks per game, 1.46 tackles per game Shane Ray: 38 games played, 13 sacks, 58 tackles | 0.34 sacks per game, 1.53 tackles per game
One huge issue with Ray as a Bears OLB is he's too small to be an effective 3 down player. Fangio likes his OLBs to be the size of many 4-3 DEs so we're talking guys who go 265-275lbs. Ray goes 245lbs and can't set the edge even as well as Floyd can. Lynch is a monster run player on the edge so he's a good compliment for Floyd.
If Vic really feels he can get some mileage out of him as an OLB I wouldn't be opposed to pursuing Ray as a FA but I wouldn't trade higher picks for him and I don't believe anyone else will either. Even when we compare stats we should note that Lynch was a 5th round pick vs Ray who was a 1st round pick whose under performed.
I've seen Ray play and he's not all that good or consistent. I don't expect Denver to keep him around next year so it's likely he'll be a 2019 UFA.
