It looks this way to me also, but that doesn't make me a happy bear. Hoyer is downright scary as a #2, is Porter a true #1 - on our team, yes, but on most NFL teams? and Royal needs to #4 or 5. Who on the roster now deserves #3 the way they've played so far this PS?
80 Mariani, Marc WR/KR 6-1 190 29 7 Montana 11 Bellamy, Joshua WR 6-0 211 27 2 Louisville 83 Braverman, Daniel WR 5-10 185 22 R Western Michigan 1 Daniels, B.J. WR 5-11 222 26 2 South Florida 85 Duncan, Kieren WR 5-11 175 22 R CSU-Pueblo 17 Jeffery, Alshon WR 6-3 218 26 5 South Carolina 18 Keaton, Derek WR 5-10 189 22 R Georgia Southern 81 Meredith, Cameron WR 6-3 207 23 2 Illinois State 15 Peterson, Darrin WR 6-2 214 22 R Liberty 19 Royal, Eddie WR 5-10 190 30 9 Virginia Tech 14 Thompson, Deonte WR 6-0 205 27 4 Florida 13 White, Kevin WR 6-3 216 24 2 West Virginia
Seems like we're stuck with Royal.
Let's put it this way, slot issue, if we are looking at the achievements so far its got to be Royal, he was real good in SD. If we are looking at games in our jersey, its gotta be Mariani, he was dependable for us. If we are looking at highest ceiling and great camp its Braverman. But, who knows
Yeah but that's the problem - he was good in Den too - for the Bears he's been injured , and even when he has played it's been forgettable . He needs to get healthy and produce or be shown the door .
Looking over Hoyer's lifetime stats I don't know that I'd call him "horrible". With exception of the 2015 regular season he's been no more than pedestrian and very average although in prior stops in AZ and Cleveland he played on some pretty horrible teams. Overall we should be no worse off than we were with McCown before he pulled off those miracle stats in 2013. Prior to that he was certainly no better than Hoyer as far as a prospect for a #2 QB spot.
I think Hoyer is capable of being more than Todd Collins v2.0 the only question is when is his vet experience is actually gonna show up because so far he's been looking like he hasn't a clue of what to do out there. I'd like to see him play the 2nd Q of this upcoming KC game with the #1 offense before I make any final judgement. For now all I can say it he needs to improve his QBR from "I suck" to "Moderately capable".
We have lots of spare CBs with little or no experience so one or two of them need to step up and prove they're ready to start. My guess is Fuller will be out longer than currently advertised. Cromartie is off the market now but Keenan Lewis is another injury prone vet recently cut by NOLA whose looking to a team to give him a shot. Pace may or may not kick his tires. Let's face it. Without a better pass rush it won't make any difference whose playing CB.
IMHO we have ample depth and talent at both WR and TE. The only real question now is whose gonna step up and own those backup spots and how many of each will we keep?

We'll go as far as Cutler goes. Simple as that. If we get last years Version of Cutler with a good running game, we have a decent Chance to fight for a Wildcard spot.
Soul, my thoughts exactly, I cant fight this feeling I have, although Ric warns me im wrong all the time, but Hoyer should be an ok backup. He is by no means the future or developing anything, but he should be ok for this season. He could be a starter for some of the teams out there (of course, needs to play much better than last week).

Quite true. I think those first two drives against NE are a good example of what we're likely to see from the offense. Loggains likes to use more play action and less shotgun type stuff so the key will be to make the running game a big enough threat to keep play action effective.
Cutler is being weaned into being more of a game manager now but one with an arm and a cadre of receivers who can go up top or up the seam on you if you focus too much on stopping the run. He should see more openings in coverage now since we can conceivably put four good receivers out there at once for him to rotate through. They can't double them all.
I expect the defense to be much better but I think it will still take a few games before they settle in with one another completely. There are a lot of new faces all still learning their roles and how to communicate with one another. Cutler can make their job much easier if he can control the ball for longer periods of time and put points on the board earlier than we've done in the past.

I like Cutler, I just hope he finally has that "great" season. Play Action is something that will help him. A good running game will help him. Hopefully Logains/Fox Keep it simple. Put him in a Position to succeed

I really feel like Cutler was ok last 3y, well 1st with Trest def., and this last one wasnt bad at all... Wish we had a little better OL and WR under Lovie. We can win with him, if we went to SB with Rex so can we with Jay

That's what we heard from so many so often before last year when Gase finally did pretty much that. I think he was much more restricted than usual because so many of his top receivers missed so much time but Gase and Loggains taught him to take what they give you and he did much better at that than ever before.
With AJ and White healthy and guys he also trusts in the slot and at TE I think we'll see Loggains open it up a bit more this year. Cutler is quite efficient throwing downfield and somewhat less so on the shorter or intermediate routes Trestman had him restricted to year two. I look for him to work downfield to AJ more and to White on some crossing stuff he can bust open with his speed and some long balls when he gets him singled up in coverage.
I think we'll begin to see more big plays this year than we have the past couple of years.

Thats the key! Jay is that kind of QB/man who need to be controlled and restrained, if not he makes a few 'wow actions' and then interception... and another one after that and we sink. So, he needs to be restricted and he'll be more than fine. Of course, with the speed of our wr's he could throw at least 2 long downfields per game
