Broncos pick Case Keenum, leaving battle for Kirk Cousins between Vikings, Jets and Cards Yahoo Sports Charles Robinson,Yahoo Sports 8 hours ago
The first quarterback domino fell in NFL free agency on Monday night. Surprisingly, it wasn’t Kirk Cousins.
Case Keenum became the first quarterback to come off the board, verbally coming to terms with the Denver Broncos on a deal that will be signed when free agency officially kicks off Wednesday. According to a team source, two factors solidified Denver’s pursuit of Keenum: The strong support of Broncos senior personnel adviser Gary Kubiak, and a player-friendly contract structure that is being pursued by Kirk Cousins. Those two realities made Keenum the more attractive choice for the Broncos – creating an aggressive push to get a deal hammered out on Monday afternoon.

It’s a tide that is believed to have begun shifting at the NFL scouting combine, as word circulated around the league that Cousins could open the free-agent negotiating period looking to secure a shorter-term, fully guaranteed contract. That kind of structure was expected to cause some attrition amongst the teams expected to pursue Cousins – and it ultimately became a reality when Denver began laying plans for the first day of free agency. Conversely, word spread around the combine that Keenum would not necessarily wait for a Cousins deal to find an NFL suitor, choosing instead to strike quickly in the process.
The Broncos ultimately decided not to make Cousins an offer on Monday, a team source said.
Kubiak gave Keenum his start in the NFL, signing him to the Houston Texans’ practice squad after he went undrafted in 2012.
This makes two team in the top 7 who've traded for or signed a starting QB. I suppose Cleveland might trade their #4 pick, or they might take a QB but Denver is now out of the market for a QB and said to be very interested in drafting Nelson.
The more QBs drafted before us the more of those top 5-6 can't miss rookie are pushed down to #8 so at least one team formerly though to be looking at drafting a QB will not be.
Yep. He is very much under the gun to solve his QB problem. I guess it was his pal Kubiak who pushed for Keenum over bidding for Cousins. I was hoping Minny would nab Cousins forcing Elway to draft a QB but now he has a choice.
I've been adamant about this for awhile, not every team will remain QB needy in the top 8. The only thing we can hope for to get more QBs taken before Chicago is a team trading up.
I don't see the Browns taking a QB at 1, but it's not impossible. I didn't see the Giants taking a QB after McAdoo was fired and this sort of recommitment to Eli. Plus I don't know how Davis Webb has grown or anything, but QB is still a possibility. Obviously Indy is set. The Browns are the curious case here... They could trade down it they could still draft their QB of the future. I mean, wouldn't it be slick of them to get the top player then letting the picks play out and still maybe getting the top QB?
Next is the Broncos which we know is set with Case. 6, the New York Jets.. this is where things get interesting. The Bills know the Jets are QB starved, the need one in the worst of ways. They hope the top QB, or the QB they want, falls to them. What if the Bills mess up their day and trade to 4 with Cleveland? Bills may also try to move up to 2 just to be safe, they are the big wildcards.
Tampa, then us. He's the thing I'm thinking about... If the Bills attempt to stay put expecting their guy to fall to them, could the Bears swing a trade down to 15 so the Cardinals can jump up? My second thought is, I'd like to pick before the Packers at 14. Nothing worse than expecting a target we want at 15 disappearing bc the Packers steal him from us.

rosto17 I can not wait til the draft as well. Interesting about the Jets because they have informed McCown he will be the starter. That has to mean they will be drafting a QB I think?
One thing for sure, we are at a great spot to get a potential starter for years.

I'm also reading they are interested in Bridgewater. Will any QBs go top 8? Lol
