+1 We have an incredible OL coach in Harry Hiestand. Let's put him to work building a strong YOUNG offensive line that can serve us well for the next decade. Also, they would not let Sitton go without Hiestand being behind that move.
Here's the deal. Josh Sitton was a 4th round draft pick who was developed into a solid OL. This is what happens when you have coaches who can develop young talent. We have that guy in Harry Hiestand now. Watch the magic happen with him as our OL coach.
Leno was a 7th rd pick and is a solid starting LT a far larger challenge; so the bad coaches in Chicago developed young talent. Thing is, you have to actually have talent for coaches to develop. See Amos/Kwik/Jackson/Floyd/Goldman...also see Whitehair/Howard/Cohen.
Bears seem to have better coaches now, so it should be a matter of getting guys that work in their O system and their ability to get them up to speed. Cohen/Shaheen cannot take the first 10+ games to figure out 2min drills.
I'm just saying we have a great OL coach now. It's an 8-man unit that has had its ups-and-downs (including depth). Some successes, certainly. But I expect us to see something very very very special on that OL when Hiestand takes over. I expect 8 solid guys that includes young, up-and-comers on the depth chart also. I could be dead wrong, but I don't think so.
What the hell else was Fox supposed to say in his recent interview? Of course he claimed the team was close.
LOL, it reminded me of Lovie telling us "we're close" and "there's a lot of football left to play" and how he "liked our chances" and... all the other stuff he floated when the Bears were not doing well. He said the same stuff at Tampa and now at Illinois. I think these coaches all go to that same school BIH went to, where you get them MSU degrees :-)
Lovie Smith: Bucs close to winning
TAMPA, Fla. – One thing has become very obvious about Lovie Smith. The coach seems to look at the world through rose-colored glasses. His team is 1-4, but Smith doesn’t sound like it...

LOL, I just stumbled upon this gem:
Both Lovie and Fox loved their reg flags. I'm thinking about offering a minor (maybe a full fledged degree) on the red challenge flag. Both Lovie and Fox are going to be instructors. We won't go into the hows and whys of throwing the challenge flag (as neither instructor has that expertise), but will focus on the important stuff.... like making sure you always have your flag with you. Making sure to practice the gunslinger-like drawing motion to make sure it doesn't snag on the initial pull.
Then of course the actual throw. How to do it. How to compensate for the wind when you are in an outdoor venue... trying to go for an officials' eye when he pisses you off.
And we'll let the students choose their specialty. Lovie can show them how not to ever change facial expressions whether you win or lose a challenge. t's really not about the challenge itself... more about the opportunity to throw the flag.
Fox can show them how to be indignant when it doesn't go your way, and not to let the cluelessness of why you threw the flag to begin with affect your indignation. Fox will follow up with how to explain off his cluelessness. It folds right back into an MSU. It's a perfect match. This is going to be big. I'm accepting deposits now.
I think that's a good move. Let Harry Hiestand build us a young talented OL. Nothing against Sitton at all. But while we have Harry H. here let's use him to build us something special here. I think he can do that.
I don't see it as a good move. You of all people talked about the importance of a great O-line. Are there any players who are arguably better then Sitton in FA or the Draft?
This reminds me of the Brandon Marshall to Kevin White situation.
Replacing a great player for a gamble at another one. Nelson may not be a big risk but he's a huge reach at #8.
I'm with you on Kevin White - with the benefit of a whole bunch of hindsight of course. But I don't see how you can say Nelson is a reach at 8. Most people seem to have him down as a generational talent. His highlight tapes go on for so long because he has so many dominating plays - and he is awesome to watch.

Just a suggestion. I heard that Lovie had his flag made into a sock-puppet that he slept with at night. Rumor has it that Trestman had one too, and that he made his players and assistant coaches talk to the puppet so he wouldn't have to make eye contact with them. Perhaps a seperate academic track could be one that teaches how to make and care for the flag sock-puppets. Just a thought.

I like it, and I see an additional revenue stream. Just like the pet rock guy made a fortune on his pet rocks and the care and feeding of these fine pets, I can do the same. Sock food. A sock bed for the sock. Sock condoms for when you have a female and male sock and don't want any little socks. I'm selling stock and going public on this one. Thanks JABF. You are a natural at seeing business opportunities!
