Yeah...it will be interesting to see how Dallas goes about this with only having about 18 million in cap space. Obviously they can probably get Lawerence signed with that room...but it doesn't leave them room to do much else. I guess they could cut Dez...but that would still leave them with 8 million in dead cap space. The only people that would provide significant cap relief for them with no dead cap hit would be Zack Martin and Jason Witten.
They can pick up $4.5 mil in cap by trading or releasing Dez and there's always a chance they can rework his or other deals. If they offer Lawrence a big signing bonus coupled with a modest 2018 salary they could easily get his cap hit well below $10 mil and time to clear more space before any rookies are signed.
The business decisions that are made in the offseason by teams are fun to watch. I enjoy the strategy.
They may have a “cap casualty” like Whitten for instance. Great great player but let’s face it, at age 35, he’s well past his prime.
They may re-structure some contracts to make more room as well.
Point is, they will find a way to get it done because they’re not going to let a young, productive edge rusher get away.
That would free up another $6.5 mil.
Yep, no team will willingly allow a top edge guy like Lawrence to walk. Tagging him would be pretty punitive so I'm sure they'll work on getting a longer term deal done.

I can't see JJ letting him hit FA.
Yeah...like I said, it will be interesting. The cap hit in dead money for cutting Dez is almost double what they'd save. Or they'll have to get creative with structure like you said. We'll see.

Much better for them if they keep Dez one more year when his dead cap is only $4 mil but has he worn out his welcome?
His 2018-2019 salaries are only $12.5 mil so IMHO he's tradeable and knowing JJ the cap hit won't bother him if he can pick up enough draft booty to offset that. If they take any of that salary and convert it to a bonus they'll have to extend his deal or they'll just end up pushing it in 2019 and his dead cap will be just as big.
Teams almost always can figure it out, even if sometimes its not optimal. Remember the big hubbub over Wilkerson and the Jets? Teams figure it out and are counting on the cap going up as well.
I didn't expect Lawrence to hit the open market.
Part of figuring that out involved sending Sheldon Richardson to Seattle and cutting several players. They also went over the cap in 2016 if I remember correctly. We'll see what happens, but whatever does happen there will be ripple effects.
absolutely there are ripples. Just saying that if Dallas wants to keep him, they can figure something out. They might/will pay for it down the road.
As an aside, Witten has to slow down eventually doesn't here? Man that guy was a beast.
