The Bears are refusing other teams interview requests with Fangio. But Fang's contract expires on Tuesday and he can walk. This is a good article that is best read on the original web site (LINK).
LINK Keeping Vic Fangio a Question of Timing Fangio is still under contract to this point and the Bears have been holding off other teams like the Packers and Bengals from interviewing him for their vacant coordinator positions. However, that’s about to change. His contract will expire on Tuesday, January 9th. Word is the team is very interested in him staying on board with the next head coach. The problem is they don’t have much time to find who that is before other teams are free to come in with their own offers.
That gives us today and tomorrow. I don't think that is going to happen, but I guess it could.
I would like to see him stay if he would fit in well with the new HC. The guy is a proven commodity here (a rare thing with the Bears). But here is what scares the crap out of me. I could just see the Bears trying to force a quick (and dumb) HC hire, just in order to force this to happen. Can't you just see them blowing the whole thing by mismanaging this? Of course with Ted, George & Ryan in charge with this hire, what could possibly go wrong? Right?

LOL...
Yep. I've seen that movie before and this movie has the same director and executive director that movie did.
The clock is Ticking and Fangio can not wait and see or other positions will get filled and he will be left outside looking in.
Hopefully 2 or 3 of the candidates will think enough of Fangio that it would make sense for the Bears to re-negotitate a deal or ensure Fangio that he will have a deal when the time comes. I hate minimizing the HC position to keep Fangio but that is basically what we are doing. Not sure who some of the candidates plan on bringing with them unless Fangio is on a couple of the prospective HC lists as a DC.
I addressed this in another thread so here I'll just summarize.
If one of Pace's top offensive prospects.....say DeFilippo or Shurmur are on board with Fangio and most of his staff staying on even though they cannot yet be signed Pace could reach an agreement in principal and then a contract executed when it can be done meaning when they are no longer in the playoff hunt for the Super Bowl.
If Fangio is agreeable Pace can execute a new contract with him now and much like Ditka and Buddy Ryan the new HC will have the defensive side of the ball covered from day one. That could really help now as I'm sure it did in 1982. FWIW if DeFilippo has already OK'd this AND Fangio agree to work with him my thinking is DeFilippo may move to the head of the class even though he can't be formally signed yet.

It may be a long shot but it's not a no shot.
Your theory is sound. The fact that this is even a question will turn off some HC candidates. It will open the door to others who are willing to play ball with Pace. IDC either way, if Fangio is going to stay he knows already.

Atleast Fangio is known and respected, much better than the rumor Emery forced Tucker on Trestman

Fangio may want to see what others have to offer. In GB has has a chance to rebuild a defense just as he did here. Cincy seems to have some very good players but needs someone who can create some structure.
If he stays in Chicago it might be to finish what he began and maybe end up with a ring. Money and control of his coaching staff may also come into play. He has options so at the very least he may want to at least listen before he decides. At this point in time it would seem he knows Pace would like him to return.
How it impacts HC prospects depends entirely on how Pace depicts it and what other option they propose as an alternative but if it does become a done deal with Fangio it will almost surely thin the herd a bit for Pace.

I can't see why Fang would want to go anywhere and rebuild a D yet again at his age. He must know the clock is ticking and by no means is he dumb. He sees AR is in the twilight of his career, and Trubs is just starting his. I really don't see him leaving now that Fox is gone. Unless of course he has a problem with Pace or the owners.
These guys are his boys now so I see him staying unless a dream HC position opens up with a pretty good base group of guys on the roster.
