Bears extend GM Ryan Pace through 2021 Arun SrinivasanJan 1 2018, 5:07 PM The Chicago Bears extended general manager Ryan Pace's contract through the 2021 season.
Chicago fired head coach John Fox on Monday after three seasons with the club. Fox posted a 14-34 record during his tenure.
"I’m going to continue to do everything in my power to get the best coaches and staff in place to make this city proud," Pace said during his press conference.
Pace said his objective is to put quarterback Mitch Trubisky in the best position to succeed. The Bears selected Trubisky second overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. During his rookie season, Trubisky completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 2,193 yards, seven touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
"It's on us to continue to surround our young quarterback with the talent he needs to succeed."
The Bears also signed quarterback Mike Glennon prior to drafting Trubisky, a move Pace tacitly admitted to being shortsighted. Glennon completed 66.4 percent of his passes for 833 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions.
The success of the Bears' next head coach may ultimately dictate Pace's future with the franchise, but for the time being, he's won a strong vote of confidence from ownership.
I like the move. Even though this turn around is taking longer than it should, and I’m not 100% sold on Pace, this moves increases our chances of landing the HC and FA’s that we target since there is stability at the GM spot rather than question marks

That's the only reason to do it and yes I understand the logic there but as you point out you can't say with a straight face that Ryan Pace has EARNED an extension.
The team was 5-11 when he took over and it's still 5-11. The team was last in division when he took over and it has finished last in each of the last 3 seasons. Zero playoff appearances along the way with the rebuild now entering its 4th year.
By any objective performance measure, Ryan Pace doesn't deserve an extension at this point.

+1 Stable young GM. Young franchise QB. A pretty decent defense. A couple of exciting young RBs. We need to do everything possible to entice the top coaches (not just HC but the entire coaching staff). And I still believe Ryan Pace could turn out to be a good GM for us. We'll see.

Agreed Pace has not earned an extension. However it’s clear Fox was not his guy. I’m willing to give Pace a chance to bring in a HC who can turn this thing around. He’s on thin ice though and he better get this HC right or he is done

And that's why it was done. More of a concession to having that stability in place as we interview coaching prospects than it is reward for outstanding performance. It's only a 2 year extension and I'm sure it didn't double his salary.

And I think most people agreed that Pace should have a 2nd shot at hiring a HC if John Fox failed. We'd better hope Pace does work out for us. This continual, rapid, cycling through GMs and coaching staffs is a killer. If Pace can bring in a solid coaching staff, and learn from his past mistakes, we could see all of this turn around. Even this next season could be a step forward... maybe a big step in the right direction and we have better football to watch.

I feel he should have a few years to build. I agree with JABF in the fact that we have to just stay the course. At least Pace seems like he has a plan, i just hope he gets the 1st pick straighten out and not try to outwit any team.

It was done for several reasons.
One was to lend more upside to a HC coming to the CHicago Bears. That way there is no threat of upheaval after one year
The second reason is that IMO the Bears genuinely like him. By doing this they probably locked into a longer contract at about the same rate. I think they want to see what Pace can do with more than a year with his own coach. Plus without seeing the contract, the Bears may have just made this move with the HC hire in sight so they could say there is stability. The last year may be voidable for instance
