Of course it is. That's the case 99% of the time with FAs. So....its pretty simple then isn't it?
Show him the money, Ryan!
It's not complicated. Do it.
I don't know if its that simple.
Do you show him the money with him only having one good year and the possibility of the guy who help develop him leaving? Who is to say Fuller won't regress once Fangio leaves? If Fangio stays I may be more willing to overpay but I don't see him staying with the new HC coming.
One of the worse things a GM can do is overpay for average talent.
10-12 million is what I be ok with. Anything more and I say don't let the door hit you on the way out.
There was a lot of speculation a week or so ago about does Fuller want to stay. He might want to go to a competitive team. Much like AJ. If that is the case money will never be an issue (meaning we couldn't pay enough).
That is really more what I fear rather than overpaying. If he doesn't want to be here, the only way to keep him is in fact to pay way over market. And you still have a guy that would rather be elsewhere. I can't really remember a time that players didn't want to play for the Bears. This is a recent phenomenon and I would love to know the roost cause. AJ, Fangio, and possibly Fuller. All personnel that we would have been better off keeping.
Why in the hell would you want to keep and pay for a guy that does not want to play here? Or, an even better question, why in the hell are we talking about overpaying or FT'ing a guy who played well only in his CONTRACT year!? If Bears had extended his rookie year, im sure we wouldnt be seeing this level of play.
Ric, the problem with "trying to get another player like... fill in the blank" is that it is really easy to type but not so easy to execute. We tried to get another player like (fill in your favorite QB) for years.... never happened. "Trying to get" is a dime a dozen. Keeping a known commodity is MUCH safer and easier to do. You must have heard about the bird in the hand is worth two in the bush (I love it when I can get some bush worked into an analogy)". Gilmore is another example. I (and my buddy BB) thought he was "another player like..." but he no longer was. Fuller has helped us. Why try to get another player like Fuller when we already have the real Fuller?
Makes no sense to me at all.
^^^ I agree completely. Bird in hand phenomena. It’s way way tougher to “get another player” in practice than in theory.
We FINALLY have the makings of a solid and young secondary after years of total awfulness. Why **** it up?
MP do I have to remind you how 'over' Fuller you've been? Guy is still a 1 year wonder and some here would brake a bank for him cos he's our draft pick, and we can't find better.... well, talk about loser mentality
Of course it is. That's the case 99% of the time with FAs. So....its pretty simple then isn't it?

+1 Better spend the money on guys who can play than on deadbeats like Mike Glennon. This isn't rocket science.
Yep. Or Markus Wheaton. Or Marcus Cooper.
If your own draft pick produces and wants to stay, you pay him at rookie-contract expiration time and you don't bitch and whine that the going market rate is "over-valued" (which is a purely subjective judgment). The only exception I can think of is if you happen to have an even younger and cheaper guy already on the roster ready and able to replace his position. We don't have that. Not even close.
Fuller and Trumaine Johnson will be the two top CBs to potentially hit FA this year and the Rams may very well re-sign TJ before Pace ever gets a shot at him. He needs to retain Fuller before FA opens in March or there's a 99% chance he's gone. Someone will pay him if we don't.

Well of the four of us in this debate three of us see it one way and one sees it totally different. No real shock who the odd man out is but then someone has to be wrong 90% of the time so it might as well be Ric. He should be used to it by now.
Im with Ric, so there you go 3-2, mp was on our side not long ago, but ok
Of course it is. That's the case 99% of the time with FAs. So....its pretty simple then isn't it?

Who is to say Fuller's replacement (who would that be, BTW? I am interested to hear your proposal!) won't "regress" or be a downgrade? How would you know that Leno or Hicks wouldn't regress in 2017 since they both signed big extensions with the Bears before the season started?
I think one of the worst things a GM can do is let homegrown/drafted talent walk out the door, especially when he has no one in the pipeline to replace them. And I disagree with you that KF is "average talent". Average CB talent is a player well below the level of play Fuller displayed this year.
If we had a roster stacked with talent, then maybe we could afford to let some of our best players walk. But we have serious talent holes on this roster already. Letting a good CB walk isn't smart. Could we gamble on a CB in the draft to back-fill for Fuller? Sure, but then that's just one more hole on the roster that goes unfilled because we had to get the CB drafted with a top pick. We are not EVER going to get a talent laden roster letting our people walk like this.
We are gonna have a BOATLOAD of cap money available this year. Especially when we walk away from the Glennon contract. What are we saving this money for? I'm getting tired of our best players leaving. Pay this guy if he will stay here. Then go looking for OTHER holes on the roster to fill with this year's FA and draft.
