Raise your hand if you want Ted Phillips out of Ryan Pace’s search for next Bears coach

Were you like me? Did you scream “Noooooooo!’’ when you heard Sunday that the Bears’ equivalent to Cubs wonk Crane Kenney reportedly was doing football legwork?
The report came from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network and it noted that Bears team president Ted Phillips has been “doing homework” on available candidates “in the likely event that John Fox is out.’’
Yes. Likely. Fox likely is out, as likely as the spasm of fear that strafed any Bears fan or observer who came across that report before the Bears faced the Browns. The last thing any Bears fans would want to hear is that Phillips was involved in something related to football except counting all the money a franchise makes even when ownership and management is a joke.
The Bears finally win a game and still find a way to ruin Christmas.
It might be that Phillips is confirming league policy for interviewing coaches at the request of Ryan Pace. It might be that Pace gave him a list of names for which to secure clearance. I don’t care. I want it to stop. The GM should be navigating this journey. The former accountant should be counting beans.
It should be Pace’s job to follow league procedures for gaining approval to interview a candidate working for another organization. You’d think it also would be Pace’s job to negotiate contract terms with his potential head coach, even if Phillips is the one setting a budget for such things. It certainly is Pace’s job to choose specific candidates.
Me, I’d do everything I could to Phillips-proof this next interview round. I’d do everything I could to George McCaskey-proof it, too. There’s no way to avoid it completely, I realize, but I’d at least try to minimize their influence in the process.
Here’s my deal with the men who were wowed by Phil Emery:
They can attend the new coach’s introductory press conference.
Of course, this presumes that Pace is safe. This presumes Pace extended his stay by drafting quarterback Mitch Trubisky and will get the chance to hire a second coach like most GMs.
Ideally, the hire would be borne of Pace’s own search, not one seemingly orchestrated by a consultant, a hire resulting from his knowledge of the workings of the league, a hire aimed specifically at coaching Trubisky into the franchise quarterback the Bears believe they have.
That has been a McCaskey shortcoming – knowledge of the league’s working infrastructure, who’s good, who isn’t. No, I should say it’s a McCaskey-Phillips shortcoming. That’s why McCaskey and Phillips resorted to hiring a consultant that brought them Pace, and Fox, too, it seems. The Pace hiring was said to be with the intent to make him the top football voice in the organization. The coaching search should verify that authority.
But if Phillips reportedly is checking around because Pace’s job also is about to be open, then the Bears would be looking for their third GM in seven years and their third coach in six. If that’s why Phillips reportedly is checking around and if he’s the one who will run the operation to find a new GM at the behest of McCaskey, then maybe the choice should be finding a new McCaskey or just surrender the franchise charter already.
