It's hard to believe, just how bad are the 31 other GM's in the NFL when every armchair GM insisted that Gentry was going to get picked up if he was cut. SHOCKED I tell you!
Again I'm to the point I really don't care what twitter has to say about how guys play in practice; and I really don't care what a guy does in PS in the 3rd and 4th qtrs against guys taht will be lucky to make a team.
Used to really like that stuff, but the reality is that line of being able to make the squad in the offseason for tryouts and actual NFL talent is a very small line. Most guys aren't going to fall onto the right side of it.
If I were a GM, I'd add him in a heart beat.
My man crush on Gentry was based on my observation that the bears had no WRs once Meredith went down. Despite all my hand-wringing I felt that everyone was content to go into the season with Wright/Bellamy/Thompson and was happy about it since the Bears are a running team. Taking a look at Gentry seemed prudent.
I still have no faith in Fox/Loggains to recognize a player when they see one, after all Bellamy getting majority snaps over McBride was idiotic. Bellamy's TD catch doesn't change that fact.
Take a look at him w/the WR's they had, sure. Assuming he could do anything in the NFL b/c of practice and his pre season play vs scrubs was pushing it. Acting like the Bears were insane and every other team would jump all over this buy was laughable(not talking about you btw, the twitterverse way over reacted to what this guy was).

we have may disagreements, but I've never felt insutled or belittled in our discussions. I've tried to do the same, if I've failed I apologize.

Nope I try to take very little to heart on these boards. I have no issue getting into deep discussions/debates w/people but I don't take anything anyone says to about me to heart for the most part.

What some are missing is how badly Gentry has been misused in this "scheme" if anyone can even call it THAT. Just because he hasn't shown it yet based on what I've seen Gentry can play at this level.
Gentry is not as much "quick" in and out of cuts as he is "sneaky fast" at getting open downfield. Meredith has some of that same thing to him but he's a far more experienced route runner now because he's been here for three years. That wasn't true when he was a rookie either. Gentry is also like a smaller version of a guy like Jordy Nelson who isn't blindingly fast either but can still get open deep and burn you because he and Rodgers communicate very well. They both seem to know when to exploit a defense that way and connect. How many times has he done that to us?
I watched some games Gentry played with Josh Allen at Wyoming. They used Gentry much like we used AJ as a "go up and get it guy" and he was also Allen's primary deep threat. The kid has a knack for getting behind his defender and making the big grab on long passes like that TD he scored on against the Titans. He can track a deep ball very well. But until these last two games Trubisky has seldom been allowed to throw that deep ball. He could just as easily have made that TD grab because it was pretty much the same play call he and Mitch connected on vs the Titans in preseason.
He and Gentry have shown in preseason that they have some chemistry but when he's been used it has been to fit Fock's concepts which seldom seem to take into consideration what a guy can do well. So much like Adam Shaheen it seems Focks expects guys to play his way before he even thinks about allowing him to play to their strengths. It's like Focks is the antithesis of a guy like Belicheat who looks to get the maximum mileage from a guy by using him in a way that compliments his strengths. Look at what Shaheen accomplished once they let him be a pass catcher for a change. Focks is a terrible personnel guy and he often handicaps his team and his QB because of it.
So let's not go comparing him to Braverman who was a slot guy only and not as good a fit for us as he may be for a team like NE where Brady can pass accurately enough to make use of guys who are smaller targets with limited speed and a small catch radius. The two are not even remotely similar based on their skills and fits in the NFL. Once Focks is gone and we get a HC and OC who can make better use of the offensive talent we have then we can judge Gentry. But as a part of this mess? No.

+1 And nobody on this messageboard was trying to say Gentry was some kind of a stud. My point (and I believe others) was that we had problems at WR and this guy seemed to be worth a look. It wasn't like we had anyone else lighting it up at WR at the time. Trubisky and this kid looked like they had some kind of chemistry going in the preseason. Gentry got an opportunity to show if he had anything to offer us this season. He didn't showcase anything and we moved on. End of story.

It was actually Ric saying Gentry was this years Braverman I wanted to clarify. They aren't even close to being the same guy and I don't think anyone has ever thought he was a stud either. Just an UDFA with a shot at contributing as Meredith has done. To date we simply aren't scheming or calling the types of passes he excels at.
There's a good chance he'll still be around for another shot later this season of someone goes down again or next summer in camp. If we ever use him well he may surprise some people but he's never gonna be a #1 or #2 WR which is what he needed to be when injuries forced it.
If we only keep 5-6 WRs next season Gentry needs to become a ST ace like Bellamy and that's how he'll manage to stick.
