Let's assume that Hoyer plays fairly consistently at the level he did yesterday and also assume that Conner Shaw returns from his injury and looks like the heir apparent. Cutler becomes expendable.
If you were a GM, what would you be willing to pay for Jay (and his contract)? I think any significant draft picks would have to be conditional. Otherwise why not wait for the Bears to release Jay and then you have a blank slate for negotiations. I would like to get as much as possible like everyone else. But as Soul says above, Jay is damaged goods in the NFL and I suspect his market value is pretty low.
Ok, but lets not forget that Jay is still a (much) better QB than Hoyer is
I was not trying to argue that we get rid of Jay and keep Hoyer. Just that Jay will not have much of a market value. And what value he has will be reduced if the perception is that we want to offload him.

That would still be my point. No matter what Hoyer may do for a few games in reality he's on par with a Josh McCown and you don't win many games with QBs like that. These types are career backup now having mostly failed as starters and if you have to play them you hope they can win some game for you but that's about it. Cutler is still a better starter than Hoyer.
As starting caliber QBs go Jay is not all that pricey so if you do decide to trade him you have to balance that out against what you're offered and if it's not enough to parlay into a pick to find a younger, better prospect then what have you gained vs continuing to keep him until you do? I don't see that guy on the roster yet and neither does anyone else.
As for Connor Shaw all he appears to be so far is quite possibly a good #2 prospect with some upside but even if he does return 100% next summer he'd still be a good year away from being ready to start. So who plays in 2017, Hoyer? I guess that's fine if all you expect is another .500 season at best so that could easily end up being three below average seasons for Fox when the expectations were a fast turn around.
That wouldn't satisfy me and I'm sure most fans and the media would be howling for someones job by then. Even if we drafted a QB next spring what are the odds we'd have one more prepared to win than a vet? I don't see it.
Bears add tight end to practice squad, waive Demontre Hurst By: Bryan Perez | 1 hour ago
After falling to 1-4 on the season, the Chicago Bears are going to keep an eye on the future while trying to remain competitive this year, so expect a lot of roster moves to be made over the next 12 weeks.
They made one such transaction today, electing to sign tight end Marcel Jensen to the practice squad. Cornerback Demontre Hurst, who was just promoted to the active roster on Saturday, was released.
Jensen has spent time with five teams after entering the NFL in 2014 as an undrafted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played his college ball at Fresno State, and at 6-foot-6 and 270 pounds, he’s had opportunities with the Broncos, Flacons, Bills and Redskins in addition to the Jaguars.
Jensen caught 46 passes for 692 yards and seven touchdowns during his final two seasons at Fresno State. He has yet to catch a pass in the NFL.
Aside from Zach Miller, the Bears have a group of unproven and underwhelming tight ends on their roster. If Jensen impresses in practice, he could have an opportunity to receive a promotion to the active roster at some point in the 2016 season.
More minor that other personnel matters but once again we keep releasing Hurst who can play both NB and Dime Safety and we keep Bush whose can't play and is inactive every week. Why? Because Fox wanted to draft him over say a Dak Prescott?
Is Fox's system to keep and play those whose jersey numbers he likes the best. I mean I can't find any logic to what he does so that might be as good a reason as any the stupid old coot. He keeps talking but never answers a question like a certain Presidential candidate I know.

I do believe it is. I came to that conclusion when he brought over kicker boy that was only so-so. He has a lot of Lovie in him.
