Well.... 2nd...3rd.... neither one of us are scouts so it's opinion and grey opinions at that. The point is, who builds a team with their backups first? You go after the starters and difference makers. The guys you play on Sundays. When you've done that, then you worry about who you have when they go down. I guess this is a stroke of genius. If everyone is second tier and they get hurt, there is no drop off in the backup guy.
They found their starting LB's and DE in the draft the last 2 years and it equated to 3 wins; how'd that work out for us?
Until you have your franchise QB there is no reason to break the bank in FA and find starters that don't equate to several wins. The team likely doesn't have it's franchise qb on the roster, so why spend 30-40 mil on a CB that might equate to 1 more win? By the time you have your QB you likely don't have that CB on your team anymore.
You sign big name FA's when you are missing that piece from a club ready to make playoff/sb runs; not when you suck ass so bad that you are a 3-5 win team.
I think he TRIED to get some impact guys. I'd like to see your formula on how you figure how many wins difference the FAs would have made. Also, how many of the losses were due to a lack of quality starters vs specifically the lack of a good QB.
It's all such opinion on all sides. I mean, not only is it opinion but it is a lack of consistent application of opinions. So we should not have signed Danny last year who was a big name FA because we were not ready to make a playoff run? Come on..... You need to build a winning team. To do that you need to consistently add difference makers. When you have as many holes as we do, you use FA as part of that whether or not it's your first choice. We did that last year. We did not this year. To say that you don't do that until you are ready for a playoff run is just to use an old time NFL cliche as to how FA is to be used. That's one theory, sure. But any way to want to argue it, the road to a playoff team is to incrementally build your team. We did that, but I don;t think we added the type of difference makers this year we did last year. And difference makers wear out. They eventually fall off the roster. The only way to win is to add more than you lose. (giving them away as we have been doing is another sore point)
But these are my opinions and mean little in the end.
