Probably happens. I mean ideally you want everyone's input...but at the end of the day the decision comes down to the person responsible for making that call.
But who is that person on the Bears?..does Pace have full control?
I guess it depends on who you talk to, but the idea that any of us here know for sure isn't probably a good one. I mean Pace does have bosses...so I'm sure he has to run things by them, just like any other GM on any other team not named Belichick.
I don't remember specifics, but the GM when Fox was there was also a former sports writer. I just find it incredibly odd that not everyone was aware of who might be on the draft board. There weren't discussions about guys who if they were available they'd pull the trigger and draft them? I mean you think the GM would have made the coaches aware that if Claussen was there he was going to draft him and to watch film and give feedback. I just find it all very strange.
Yeah... I mean you can't say for sure it could not have happened, but I agree.... It just sounds like a stretch. Hard to believe he didn't have a clue. oh wait..... We ARE talking about Fox here, so maybe he really didn't have a clue.
Actually, Clausen was Fox's pick at Carolina. Kind of. The story goes that Fox was present in the draft war room when Clausen's name was mentioned. Fox thought they were asking him if he wanted pickles on his sandwich - and said he would kill for a juicy Claussen. The GM thought that was a weird comment on the young QB, but he did spend that draft pick on Clausen. The story goes that Fox wasn't upset with the pick, but was pissed that they didn't have the pickles for his sandwich.

You are becoming quite adept at MSU, young grasshopper!

I watch your every post trying to learn from the master :-)
Were Fox and the GM at war or something? The whole thing sound nuts to me.

Hurney did have a background in journalism but he was not just an inexperienced sports writer. The Clausen pick aside he was the guy who helped build the Panthers SB team.
You know it's entirely possible Fox was kept away from draft day decisions for the exact same reason I believe Pace should do the same. Fox simply does not like rookie QBs and if you want my opinion he knows jack about even evaluating them period. Remember this is a guy who wanted to play Osweiler the next season over Manning after Manning lost the SB AND who thought (and still thinks) Brian Hoyer would be a better starter for the Bears than Jay Cutler.
To be honest I don't give him any credit for his knowledge of QBs or offensive football in general. The guy won in Denver ONLY because he had two good OCs AND a vet QB who was almost as good as his own OC as a play caller. See this for what it is. Just one more way John Fox will try to slide out of his role when something doesn't work as planned. The part of him is far more legendary than his rep as some kind of a "turnaround guru".
Before coming to the Panthers in 1998, he served in the front office of the San Diego Chargers as General Manager Bobby Beathard's right-hand man.[2] A journalist by trade, he first began in football in the Washington Redskins public relations department when owner Jack Kent Cooke asked him to join the team.[3]
After the Panthers began the 2012 season with a 1–5 record, Hurney was fired by the Panthers on October 22, 2012.[4] Many of the best players on the 2015 Panthers team that won the NFC Championship were drafted by Hurney, including Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly, and Thomas Davis.
