Moon Mullen from CSN Chicago hints that the coaching staff possibly all the way up to Trestman were ready to move on from Cutler. Not sure why this is coming out now but what could have been.... Emery obviously overruled him to the tune of a 7/126M contract.
The Bears may find themselves in a situation not entirely dissimilar from where they stood in the 2014 offseason and were faced with a decision on Josh McCown after his career-best stretch in relief of Cutler. Then-GM Phil Emery wanted Cutler over the feelings of the coaching staff and signed Cutler to that $126 million contract. McCown’s price rose to eventually $5 million per season and the organization went in another direction with Jimmy Clausen.
Not sure what other options we had other than McCown.
I've said for awhile that it seemed like Trestman was hired b/c of his willingness to let the GM do what he wanted(Emery decided who was on the team, he decided who the DC was etc). So this is no surprise. And it was that lack of ego/leadership that ultimately allowed the team to completely fall apart under him.
Cutler doesn't fit what Trestman wanted to do, and in general has been difficult to work w/any of the coaches in the past. So it's no surprise that Trestman was ready to send him packing. Honestly I'm starting to wonder if the Cutler thing goes higher then the GM though, I wonder if the people above the GM have told the GM to keep Cutler. B/c he even if he wasn't moved on from, his potential successor should have been on this team awhile ago.
This offseason is going to be interesting. I hope Hoyer is not part of it.
Why? He'd be a good backup QB. Better than Barkley. If they had moved on from Loggains I could see moving on, but they can sign him for cheap and actually address QB with either a high draft pick or a Jimmy G trade. Either of which will again require the lion's share of the 1st team reps leaving little time for the backup to get up to speed.
Once the Bears have a QB as the starter for a season or two and they actually decide to keep the OC as well, hey, they can get silly and try to "develop" a backup for cheap. Until then, go with the easiest way even if it is a bit more expensive.

I can't get his Houston play out of my mind. He made Cutler look good. Really good. I did not see those meltdowns in Chicago, but I never saw wins either.

I also think that he gave up during his second season as well.
I think that is why Bruce wasn't hired as the head coach.
