I'd be in favor of spending a 2nd on an OL, pref OT. The other 2nd has to go to OLB.
We need to draft a QB next year. So we need a 2nd for that.
If there's one there that they really like, fine by me. Don't be surprised if there isn't though and I don't want to squander a 2nd round pick out of desperation.
Geno Smith
Hackenburg
Kizer
All recent 2nd rounders, all sucked beyond description.
But over all, I agree with you. Pace needs to take a shot next draft wherever he feels the value is best.
That is reasonable because it doesn't go to either extreme. In fact, I would have no problem if the Bears saw a guy fall to them in that 2nd round and drafted a QB there. Not to replace Mitch next year but why not add an asset like that? This is exactly what the Patriots do and I like it. If Mitch turns out okay, you still have a solid backup. If Mitch doesn't work out in 2020, then for 2021 you may have a youngster worth giving a shot to as a replacement. Worst case you should have a solid backup either way.
Bears don't have the draft capital to "go to the extreme" regardless.
Looking at the big picture: Bears have 3 QBs on the roster--Trub, Chase, & Bray. Bray is in his last year of PS eligibility and is a FA. I'm assuming he will be gone and besides he nothing but a deep backup anyway. Daniel can be released this offseason netting ~ $7m in cap savings which is a total no-brainer. A) We are gonna need that $ and B) he's a 33 yo vet backup who's ceiling is #2 at best.
Bears are gonna have to (and should) replace 2 of 3 their QBs this offseason. Mitch has one more year on his contract and will (likely) be gone after that. That means replacing 3 QBs in all likelihood within 2 years.
When he first took the job, Ryan Pace talked about "drafting a QB every year". That may be a bit much but I think every team, especially if they don't have a Rodgers or a Brees or a Brady, should be drafting a QB at least every two years. Ryan Pace has drafted only 1 in 5 years.
They need to get a vet QB this offseason who is at least a plausible starting competitor for Mitch. Those two guys battle it out for #1/#2. And they should draft a day 3 QB to compete with some camp arm/UDFA for the #3 position. If Trubisky balls out in 2020 and becomes the franchise starter we all hoped for, hey great, there's no need to draft another QB until 2022 or so. If not, you let him walk in FA after the 2020 season, harvest a comp pick, and try to shoot for a replacement in the 2021 draft when we actually have a 1st round pick. And you KEEP DRAFTING QB until you get it right.
That's the realistic set of options we have.
The Patriots have drafted 6 quarterbacks in the last 10 years. That's 60% of the drafts. Their latest I watched briefly in a game this year and he ran the offense well. Remember the year Brady was out 4 games & they won 3 of them?

You're right ^^^^. I read that stat too as well one that showed the Pats, going all the way back to when Brady first became their starter, have drafted a QB roughly every other yeareven though they had their #1. Several of them have gone on to start for other teams.
This. But we have to fix the O Line as well. Doesn't matter who our QB is with this crew.

I think you have to question if some of what Nagy does is b/c the OL isn't as good as it needs to be. Or maybe it was good enough to do what he asked them to do, but cannot handle more. The OL struggled for 2 straight years w/run blocking, this year we see it w/pass blocking also since they aren't moving trubs out of the pocket as much. Is it possible that the gimmick stuff last year helped limit Mitch's progression, sure but I think it's more about how he's limited by staying in the pocket w/an OL not strong enough to reliably move up and step into throws.

That's my thinking too, Ric. The OL is probably the biggest negative factor, and we all seem to agree that there are other factors going on here also. We've beaten the dead horse on all of them, but it all adds up to what we see on gameday - an offense that is horrific to watch. I don't think anyone has "ruined" Mitch. Because I don't think he is ruined. I think he is a young QB trying to develop and mature, but he is in a situation that is tough to overcome for a youngster. Even if the Bears had a decent OL and the other support was in place Mitch had a steep learning curve due to his inexperience. But that learning curve is exponentially more steep due to all the negative factors he is up against this year. I feel sorry for the guy. And frankly, I don't think we (fans) can accurately judge how good or bad he will ultimately be, because of the situation on offense this year. How much is on Trubs, and how much is on the other factors? We just don't know at this point. I sure can't figure it out.

He does not have much time left to get "un-ruined", sorry. And as tempting as it may be to comfort ourselves by blaming the OL, keep in mind Watson was destroyed behind a far worse one his 1st 2 years and still is far ahead of Trubisky at this point.

Why can't Ryan Pace do that?
Because it's not the drafting of Qbs for NE....The heart and soul of that team is Bill. He is a beast of a HC regardless of all the cheating talk over his time there. If he didn't have Brady he would have another serviceable Qb as he's proven to get before with the backups. He may not have got all them rings with another Qb, but he would sure the hell have his team competing for the playoffs every year.
Trubisky's success or failures have nothing to do with the team this year...this team's Offense looks like shit! and that is on Nagy and other coaches.
The Bears could draft a Qb every year, but if we have bad coaching it really doesn't matter. It shows when watching any replay of games...
Guys standing around Guys missing simple blocking reads Confusing play action blocking schemes Wr's running routes to the same place and hitting each other Dropped balls
Etc, etc, etc.....This is on Nagy and his offensive staff IMO...
