It's a shame but you could see this coming a mile away. He was getting benched or IR'd either way and I suspect the IR is just a cover for what we all know--he's not playing well enough to justify a starting spot.
Yes, the London game was definitely his last as a Bear and frankly Kyle should just retire this offseason.
I actually think this will make the OL better. Addition by subtraction phenomena. TBH, the OLs best game this season (vs Minny) was the one game Kyle Long missed.
Bars being promoted to regular roster coming next.

I just am thankful the Bears did the right thing on two levels here. This saves KO some embarrassment, but it also shows that they are willing to move on from a popular player. Lovie would have kept him on even though he could no longer play. This tells us something about Nagy that I like to see. Play your best guys no matter what they've done in the past. You gotta do this or you'll always be a mediocre team. And maybe I'm reading way to much into it, but perhaps this bodes well for QB if Nagy gets to a point he doesn't believe Trubisky is the guy. Hope it doesn't have to come to that, and Trubs IS the guy. But if not, then don't dink. Move on. Next man up.
I'd like to see Coward get the start at RG. He's been patiently waiting for his shot for over a year now, he looked good in a brief appearance during the Minnesota game, and he's seems to bring a mean streak. Which is something this OL could really use as they have played really soft. I want to see some attitude and some nasty in this unit going forward. And I hope this move (frankly, overdue) lights a fire under Charles Leno who has been the 2nd worst OLman this year after Long.
No doubt in my mind this IR-thing was a face-saving maneuver. Kyle Long isn't really hurt badly enough to miss the next 11 weeks. This was a "you're done starting and won't be back next year but we won't make you stand on the sidelines holding your helmet for the cameras" type of move.

It's a shame his Bears career is probably going to end like this. He was a team guy and a good player for us who played through a lot...but you could tell he wasn't 100% this season. I wish him the best in whatever the future holds.

Hell, I think it was Fox's last season as the coach, Long was played injured.

I wish the Bears had made this move prior to the season beginning. The games Long appeared in this year, he hurt the team. I like Long, and respect all that he has done for the Bears. But he was not ready to play this season. The Bears should have seen that and made the adjustments then, rather than for the 6th game of the season.

Frankly, if Long hadn't played week 1 I think we would have won (watch the tape on how many blocks he massively whiffed on that game).
Tough call but I think Pace/Nagy hoped they could squeeze one more decent season out of him and they were wrong. Besides his dead cap if cut this August was pretty high. Classic case of holding on to a vet just a little too long. Then once that happens there's the problem of how to bench a respected, popular but under-performing player like he is without causing political repercussions.
Let's be honest--if Kyle Long was playing well he wouldn't have been IR'd, even if he wasn't 100%. That was purely a face-saving move to get him out of the starting lineup.
