Trubisky is still being evaluated in his 3rd NFL season to see if he's a franchise QB. Some are saying we won't have a firm handle on this until his 4th season.
This just reinforces the fact that evaluating a college kid pre-draft, trying to predict if a kid can be a franchise QB, is anything but a science. You can look at the metrics and measurables all you want, but in the end it's a gamble. This is why there are so many busts when drafting QBs. This is why so many NFL teams have mediocre to poor QBs every year. If this was easy, then everyone would have a Tom Brady.
To me the potential challenge with Mitch comes up with the next contract. They knew going in about his lack of overall experience, where they may have failed is understanding if he’d be “the guy”, or not, in time for the contract.
.....After the 2020 season you can't delay any longer and a decision has to made one way or another. Problem is, I don't see how they can generate any real competition at the QB position between now and then to make that a truly fair and genuine choice. I have no problem giving MT a 4th year but it sure would be nice if somehow that 4th year wasn't just handed to him and he had to beat out a competitor and prove himself.
This is why I'm in favor of using one of those 2nds on a QB. Give him real competition, not Daniel or Bray. Let's face it, without a qb, even if everything else gets 'fixed,' aren't we still just the Lovie Bears?
I also was not aware that the 5th year option can be rescinded. Are you sure? (Not attacking you, just curious about something I didn't know.)

I think the staff knows what they have right now with Trubisky. We as fans have a good grasp on ability to reach potential after 3 years. I'm sure the staff is spending countless hours trying to make it work with Trubisky's strengths and limitations to see if it can work for another year or 2. If not, you gotta move on and find an alternative.
Given how rookie contracts are structured, 1st rounders will get 4 years to prove something. Some get 5 if they showed some promise.

The 5th year option is only guaranteed for injury so yes it can be rescinded (unless the player is hurt).
Floyds 5th year option can be rescinded this offseason unless he’s hurt. I’m not sure when the deadline is though.

+1
That's exactly how I see it too. Due to the years needed to go through the QB cycle (draft/development) it's my hope that if they have their mind made up that Mitch is not the guy, then don't dink. Get the new cycle started sooner rather than let years slip by like we did with Jay Cutler. Be decisive. Because once you DO get that franchise QB then everything else is that much easier for sustained winning. Don't give up on a young QB too soon, but don't waste years if you KNOW he's not your guy.
I thought initially that bringing Jay Cutler here was fantastic, but later realized that the Bears bringing Jay Cutler here was one of the worst moves I've seen as fan of 50+ years. Not because Jay was that bad, but because he was a "tease" who delayed us getting the guy we need at QB here. 8 years just wasted.
And if a QB needs "perfect" support to be adequate here, then he is not our guy. This is the NFL where you don't get "perfect" everything around you - perfect WRs, blockers, TEs, defenses to shorten the field, coaches calling perfect games, perfect run game, etc, etc, etc. You can't sustain winning with a guy who needs perfect. Yes, super bowls have been won (a few times) with mediocre QBs but that's the exception not the rule. Consequently if Mitch is going to need perfect support then he's not our guy. If he can only win with perfect support then he's just another mediocre QB. Not saying he is, but saying that IF he is then let's get the cycle going soon to get the guy we need.

Sorry but this is not an accurate statement at all. You're acting as if we let a bunch of QBs slip through are hands during those years. The reality was there was nobody better out there we could have drafted.
These are the only QBs that were available that I (and I believe others) would have taken over Cutler between 2009-2016 when Cutler was on the team. Matt Stafford Cam Newton Andrew Luck Carson Wentz Jared Goff (Maybe)
Russel Wilson
Teddy Bridgewater (Maybe) Derek Carr (Maybe) Jimmy Garoppolo
The top of the list were number 1 or 2 draft picks with the Bears having no ability to draft any of them.
Wilson was available but every team, included the one that drafted him, passed on him twice. He was basically a 4 leaf clover. The other 50 odd QBs drafted in 3rd round were back ups at best.
Bridgewater was a possibility but his career hasn't been particularly note worthy yet so the jury is still out on that.
Carr and Garoppolo might have been nice but do you think the 2014-2015 teams would have done anything worthwhile with them? Would Jimmy be where he is now not having been on the Patriots and instead under tutelage of Trestman and Fox?
So no the Cutler years were not "wasted" there just wasn't a lot of other options out there. This is why it's more important to have a quality organization than spending draft pick after draft pick trying to win the QB lottery.

I get your points that it was tough sledding as as far as QB talent in the draft. I still wish Cutler had never landed here. But your point is also valid that we had poor coaches for any QB during those years. My point was not to bring up the past but to learn from it. If you realize your QB is not the guy then don't waste years with him. At least try to do better. If you never try in life you're probably never going to achieve much.
