That's the main reason why I didn't want to lose him.
I'm realistic here--the team is gonna have to economize going forward for a few years. We have another draft coming up with less than a full set of picks and we all know Pace is gonna have to make some tough choices on who to re-sign and who to let walk. There will be good players with tread-left-on-the-tires that we simply won't be able to keep for salary cap reasons.
Kyle Long looks likely to be one of them, especially if he gets hurt again in 2019. To stay competitive long-term, like New England does, we are going to need to squeeze production out of cheaper players like late rounders and UDFAs.
Bars has a shot to become one of those cheap UDFA contributors, like Callahan was and Robertson-Harris still is. So yeah, even if he plays not a single down this season, I wanted him ON THE TEAM and I'm glad he cleared waivers.
I have a feeling that if Coward wasn't hurt and probably unavailable week 1, they would have cut Lucas and not risked Bars on waivers at all. Lucas made the team (for now) because he's the only backup tackle we have who's fully healthy and has some experience. His play certainly didn't justify keeping him.
Long, TGab, ARob, DannyT, TreyB, Prince, Maddie, all guys that are likely not on the team in the coming years. this is why having limited draft picks hurts.
Pace is going to need to contiue to hit in all areas of the draft and udfa.

Pace is going to need to continue to hit in all areas of the draft and udfa.
ARob is the one most likely to get another contract IMO as he's only 25 yo. I think good chance Long, Trevathan, and Prince are gone next year to sign Cohen and Jackson. You can add Trey Burton to that list if his injury woes linger (sounds like he's not gonna play Thursday). Ditching Chase Daniel's $6m cap hit as well maybe lets us keep DannyT for another 2 years.
Point is, a guy widely thought of as a mid-round talent who you got lucky to land as a UDFA like Bars is probably someone you don't want to toss aside lightly. He may be starting at RG a year from now.
Massie is locked up for at least 3 years but I do agree the Bears need to get a young OT prospect in the development pipeline.
they'll just have to keep cutting eventually for Trubs. right now you have a ton of cheep wr youth on the team, thats why I mentioned ARob. massie might just be a cap casualty. I agree they need youth at OT.
FWIW, we just posted a copy of the roster depth chart on the left side of the forum page. It is right under the Bears schedule. I hope this is helpful.
