Yes, that’s true. It’s also true that some are avoidable. Or at least possibly avoidable.
Pre-Nagy we had a freakish amount of pulls/strains and it seems that those were not entirely by chance. I’m glad the team tried a new S&C staff cuz the last one was either not getting the job done or was really, really unlucky.
Yeah, it's a mix of things. The S&C coach generally has no input on how the head coach runs a practice, and head coaches need to be mindful of the load their putting on these guys as much as the S&C guy does. Fox was an old school guy who probably ran an old school practice.
Some things are avoidable. But some things are just bad luck. Freakish injuries.

Sounds reasonable and I'm sure you're right about Fox. Season is a marathon not a sprint--old school HC like him prob has no concept of keeping guys "fresh" for down the road.
Funny you mentioned that cuz for some reason I was thinking about this the other day.
This August there’s zero reason Khalil Mack needs to play a single down in the preseason. Could probably say the same thing for Hicks, Travathan, Cohen, and Robinson too.
Kyle Long too. I get it that the starting unit needs reps as a unit, but man, I do not like exposing him to a pre-season injury. Great player. But hasn't completed a season in years now. Why chance losing him before the regular season even starts?
You could add Long to that mix too, I agree. Point is, established starter/star veteran players with nothing to prove should be able to get enough reps in practice I would think without exposing them to needless injury risk in a meaningless preseason game.
The so-called starters generally only play a series or two anyway in the first 2 PS games and maybe a half in the 3rd. They don't play at all in the 4th. Is that worth the risk???
Mack sat out the entire preseason last year and still dominated in week 1. Absolutely no point in risking him a single down and I think you can make a similar solid case for a bunch of other key veteran guys as well.

I agree about the old school guys. Only the smart ones figured out that it is OK to keep your starters out.

But Mack seemed to get dinged by a bit if a soft tissue bug early on in the season. While I totally agree that there is no sense in playing him in PS games. They need to make OTAs and TC.
While regression is certainly a thing it's rarely a one year up one year down thing and it goes both ways.
In 2014 we had a lot of bad injuries and I thought well we should regress to the mean next year.
Then in 2015 we had even more bad injuries and I thought it's likely that won't happen 2 years in a row.
Then in 2016 it was somehow even worse and I thought surely we'll start to regress to the mean next year right?
2017 was a bit better but we were still at the bottom of the league in injuries and I thought something's got to break because this is ridiculous.
So in 2018 we actually had some good health for a change. But that doesn't mean it's less likely will have good health in 2019. Just like it didn't mean a low number of injuries right after a high injury season.
I talked about the injuries for I don't know how long. Glad we made improvement, but some things are unavoidable.

Whenever there's a rash of lower leg injuries early on, I usually blame the field. Now that they are planning to change Soldier Field's usage that we might see more early leg injuries before the sod can freeze to the ground.

It will be like old times... patching the Soldier Field holes in November.
