I want to note, I’m not sharing these “anti” Howard posts to bag on the guy. I like him as a person and as a player, but there are clearly good reasons/justifications to move on from him. It’s very possible we already upgraded Howard with Davis just by scheme fit alone so why hang on to him?
The reason for that stat is because Howard was one dimensional. Defense knew he was not a threat to catch the ball. It limited Nagy's play calling ability. Once a more dynamic back was in the play calling opened up and defenses had more to worry about.
Not really a fan of that. Pace failed to get one of the top RBs in FA and now created a hole on offense that wasn't needed this year at least.
We can't afford wasting our limited picks on a RB this year...
Whats the hole? And we were most likely drafting a running back either way...not sure you've noticed all the draft eligible running backs that have visited Halas hall lately. I think the count is up to 5 so far and the draft is a month away.
ya but that was bc we had a oc that was behind the times on what TE could be with a ahead of his time athlete. this time we have a abead of the times hc and a rb that plays a behind the time role.
Ding Ding Ding. You can see with the signings from last year and so far this year Nagy wants SPEED on offense. Howard, with his 4.59 speed ain't that. He also didn't seem to mesh with the blocking scheme.

The hole is a caliber starter who has 2 years of 1,000+ yard seasons and another one with 900+ in a much more pass happy team.
If Pace was going to trade Howard regardless. Should of done it when his value was at its highest.

As opposed to Davis, with his 4.61?
4.52 at his pro day...which is where Howard ran his 4.59. Had Howard ran his 40 at the combine(the only thing he didn't do) he would have been in the 4.6's to 4.7's based off his pro day time. Also, unlike Howard, Davis can catch the ball.

1. Howard had 1300 yards his rookie year. That year he only had 2 more carries than he had this year.
2. Double Mike Davis' 514 yards on 112 carries and you get more yards than Howard had this year on 25 less carries.
3. Beyond better production in the run game, you also now have a guy who can catch the ball...something Howard could not do.
So again...where is this hole? Lastly, Howard's value was at it's highest after his rookie season. He's been worse every year since then, and he's going into the last year of his deal...so I'm not sure what you're talking about there.

MOTM, got news for you--we were drafting a RB this year whether Howard was on the roster or not. You're kidding yourself if you think JH was ever gonna remain a Bear past 2019. Not a snowballs chance and that was made very clear to anyone reading between the lines.
I admit the trade compensation feels a bit underwhelming but--again--Mr. Market doesn't care what you or I think. That's what he's worth because that's what the market has said he's worth. Unlike us fans, the market is impartial rather than emotional.
It's not like he wasn't on the block for a while. It was the worst kept secret in the league and 30 other teams looked and passed (or offered even less).

Like I said in the chat...I'm not anti-Howard. He's a nice back, and thats where it ends. Let's not make him out to be something more than he is. He's not fast, he's not a game breaker, he's not dynamic, he's not a threat in the pass game. In the right scheme he can do some things. Thats not that valuable in todays NFL. He's not Saquan Barkley. So sorry if I'm not all broken up about this one. And no...we were not likely to get a compensatory pick for Howard after next season.

He's 3rd in the NFL in yards after contact and rushing since 2016. In 3 seasons he has produce 3,300 yards.
Let's not understate how much he has produce.
Hard to not see you as anti Howard when in another post you say he can't catch. 2018 Howard could catch...
Again if Pace's plan was to trade Howard should of done it last year when his value was at his peak. Now we got worse as a team and help the very team that beat us in the playoffs.
I'm not upset with the fact we traded Howard. I'm upset with how little we got back for him.
