This offseason brought us 3 pretty major converted/restructured contracts, lets take a look at what that means for the future.
Kyle Long signed a new 2 year $12.2 million restructured contract with.
Cap hit this year is $5,600,000, with dead cap being $7,000,000, so we get to keep him this year.
But, next year, with cap hit being $9,600,000 and dead cap only $1,500,000, I say we either cut him completely or (I hope) we place another deal on the table. Remember he'll be only 31/32 then, and hopefully healthy this season.
Eddie Goldman converted his $3M roster bonus into a signing bonus, clearing $2.25M of cap for this year.
We of course keep him this season, but then it gets trickier (and tough on our cap), next season he has a cap hit of $10,800,000 and dead of $8,850,000, so hes def. here but moderately pricey.
Gets even tougher next year (2021) with $11,810,000 cap hit and still huge dead cap of $5,900,000.
In 2022 we surely cut him or hopefully strike a new deal with cap hit of $18,890,000 and dead cap of $2,950,000. He'll only be 28/29 then.
And our cap champions Khalil Mack for last. He converted $13M of 2019 base salary & roster bonus into signing bonus clearing $10.4M of cap space.
This year, everything is cool, but then it starts. 2020 $26,600,000 cap hit with $45,500,000 dead and 2021 with $26,646,000 cap hit and $21,400,000 dead.
2022 looks ripe for another restructuring of some sort, its $27,150,000 in cap hit with $12,000,000. He will be 31/32 at that point.
To conclude, our front seven (or five) are gonna get mighty pricey next couple of years. Take a look at these Goldman and Mack's contracts. Add Hicks large contract to it. And (maybe) Floyd's new contract. Danny T is up for extension next year... No wonder there is no money left for DB's.
Hopefully these guys stay healthy and our front-office guys do their magic.
Ideally our super bowl window is now or next year at the latest. Really the team is built. There will never be a "perfect" roster. Players come and go. Coaches come and go. But 2019 seems to be showtime for the Chicago Bears. Actually, 2018 could have been a deep playoff run if we had just converted a 43 yard field goal.
2019 is also the year we need Trubisky to hit his stride as a franchise QB. It is time. Sure, he will continue to mature beyond this 3rd NFL season. But if he has the right stuff, then we should see him looking pretty solid this year. Now or never.
