Chicago Bears Meet Privately With Highly Athletic Corner

The Chicago Bears seem to have maintained their focus at certain areas throughout the process leading up to the NFL draft this April. Running back is one of them but another has been defensive back. This is no surprise given they just lost two starters in Adrian Amos and Bryce Callahan. It’s never a bad thing to seek out future replacements.

A number of names have floated across their radar to this point, but it seems another one can be added to the list. According to Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst, Bears representatives were set to meet with cornerback Xavier Crawford down at the Central Michigan pro day. Crawford is the lesser known of the two corners from that team, the other being Sean Bunting.

These are the types of DBs we need to draft. Low key guys with triangle numbers who can be coached up. We’re not going to walk away with blue chippers this year, so we need to dig deep and take risks on high ceiling athletes.

I agree. But you are not going to find a blue chip 1st rounder who falls that far due to injury every year.

This just reminded me of what a great resource compensatory picks can be. The Patriots have two 3rd round comp picks this year. They always seem to have the comp picks to gamble on guys like this. Think about it. The Pats never have a high draft order pick... usually around 30th or so in the draft. Yet the team is always loaded with Super Bowl level talent.

This is what I want to see the Bears do. Get in the comp pick game. Extra draft picks give you a "margin of error" safety net for when a percentage of your draft picks don't turn out (and even the Pats have draft misses... all teams do).

Anyway, that was what came to my sleepy morning-mind when I read this about diamonds in the rough.
