If we cut Chase, dead cap is half of his contract - 3m
Yeah, tough hit with our limited money right now this year. We will probably have Chase here for another year. We were 1 and 1 with him last year starting. He is butt ugly to watch play, but it is what it is I guess. I agree with riczaj01 that Trubisky probably needs a guy like Chase this year in the QB room, but soon he shouldn't need that anymore. This will be Mitch's 3rd season, and 2nd in the Nagy offense. Next year it would be nice to upgrade the backup QB to something better than Chase anyway.
I’m not sure Bortles is all that much better than Daniels. He’s a notoriously inaccurate and fairly weak armed QB that Jacksonville rode as a “starter” way way too long. He’d also probably be more expensive so what’s the point of changing?
Yeah, Daniels is a schlub. With rare exception, all backup QBs are schlubs. That’s why they aren’t starting.
Daniel is so bad he was never an option as a starter though. he is legit bad. bortles is bad, and again i dont want him, but no doubt in my mind he is better then Daniel. Daniel v bortles is like good college team vs bad NFL team. the bad NFL team still always wins even though they aren't good.
Well, I would argue that the only reason Bortles was ever a “starter” is that he was way way overdrafted and Jacksonville stuck with him way way too long before admitting their mistake (which was obvious to the rest of the league and most media).
Im realistic about Daniels—he’s barely adequate to win with and that’s with a top-5 D keeping the game manageable. Won’t happen this year but in 2020 I’d like to see Pace spend a 3rd-4th round pick on a QB to groom as a backup (another reason why getting comp picks is a good thing). A drafted backup would be cheaper, probably no worse, and if you get lucky and he turns out to show promise they can sometimes be traded for a good return.

+1 And hey, maybe we just end up with a decent young backup who can be here for years. I'd be fine if we could just get a solid game manager guy who may not win games on his own, but who would not lose games for us on his own. And FWIW, 9 Super Bowls have been won by a backup QB. I didn't know that until I was just surfing the web today looking at backup QB stuff.
Bortles is mobile and has at least as good an arm as our back up. Price ain't right, don't matter. Just think that at some point you want more than what the bears have rolled with as backup qb during the last 2 coaches' tenure. Bortles 2y ago finally cracked 60% completions and put together some good games versus the leagues very best. That's likely better than what Chase can do.
I think Bortles can play, esp if you let him move the pocket.
Tyrod Taylor or Jacoby Brissett would have been a nice backups.
+1 ... especially for Taylor.
But the issue is if we release Chase, we still have $3 million in dead money and it will take at least $3 million to sign someone like Taylor so you are spending the same and possibly more money for a backup QB.

ya but an actuaslly good backup qb instead of schlub. Sorry but chase is turrible. Tyrod is far from great, but he's not turrible

Exactly, replacing Daniels isn't cost effective right now. Next year more likely.
